Chanzo cha methali hiyo, chaangalia wanyama wanaoitwa vicheche. Vicheche hao, huishi kwenye mapango au mashimo mbalimbali ambayo kila mmoja amendaa. Kila mmoja huishi kwenye shimo lake alilolichimba. Lakini basi, vicheche hao wakisikia kwamba mmoja wao amevamiwa, wote hutoka mashimoni mwao, kwenda kumsaidia mwenzao. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘vicheche wengi hawachimbiani mashimo/mapango.’

Methali hiyo, hulinganishwa kwa watu wale ambao wana uelewano mzuri wa kusaidiana haraka wanapoona kwamba mwenzao amepata matatizo. Watu hao, wanaelewana vizuri katika maisha yao, kwa sababu kila mmoja wao hufanya kazi zake, huku akiwa tayari kwenda kuwasaidia wenzake wenye matatio, kwa haraka inavyo wezekana.

Wao hufanana na vicheche wanaojitegemea katika kuyatekeleza majukumu yao, huku wakiwa tayari kwenda kuwasaidia wenzao waliopata matatizo, kwa sababu nao wana uelewano wa kusaidiana vizuri katika maisha yao. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘vicheche wengi hawachimbiani mashimo/mapango.’

Methali hiyo, hufundisha watu juu ya kuwa na uelewano wa kusaidiana vizuri katika kutatua matatizo mbalimbali, kwa kuzishika amri za Mungu na za Kanisa, maishani mwao, ili aweze kuishi kwa amani na wenzao katika maisha yao.

ENGLISH: MEERKATS DO NOT DIG HOLES FOR EACH OTHER.

The source of this proverb is the wild animal known by the name of meerkat. These animals always live in caves or pits, which each one of them digs. Each of these meerkats live in its cave/pit but when it comes that one of them is attacked by an enemy, all of them living around can come out to defend their fellow. This is why people came with this proverb to mean that meerkats do not dig caves/pits for others rather they dig them for their own but protection against enemies is the responsibility of each one of them.

This proverb can be compared to those people who have a good understanding of helping each other as soon as they find out that someone is in need of help. These people understand others well and they are able to help them. These people are highly needed during times of crisis.

The proverb teaches people about the need of helping each other in solving problems. It also teaches people to abide by God’s and Church’s commandments by ensuring that needy people are helped accordingly.

Imbuki ya kahayile kenako, yilolile bhushindiki bho nhumba uyo witundile. Unsumba ng’winuyo, agabhiza adadamile chiza, kunguno ulu ushindikwa agashigila hasi duhu. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘dashindikaga nsumba witundile.’

Akahayile kenako, kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo otumagwa nimo hanh’u na uja malali. Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agalekaga unimo uyo otumagwa gujugutumama. Uweyi agandyaga milimo yakwe iyo ayitogilwe weyi ng’winikili.

Umnhu ng’wunuyo, agikolaga nu gumshindika munhu uyo witundile uyo agashigila gugwa hasi duhu, kunguno nuwei agajaga malali bho gwiyibha igiki otumagwa nimo nhebhe nabhiye. Hunagwene abhanhu abho bhantumaga bhagayombaga giki, ‘dashindikaga nsumba witundile.’

Akahayile kenako, kalanga bhanhu higulya ya gutimija chiza imilimo iyo bhatumagwa na bhichabho, kugiki bhadule kupandika matwajo mingi, umuwikaji bhobho.

KISWAHILI: TUMESUKUMA KIJANA ALIYECHUCHUMAA.

Chanzo cha msemo huo, chaangalia usukumaji wa kijana ambaye amechuchumaa. Kijana huyo, hukosa uimara wakati huo, kwa sababu akisumwa huanguka chini. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘tumesukuma kijana aliyechuchumaa.’

Msemo huo, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule aliyetumwa kutekeleza jambo fulani, akaenda kimoja. Mtu huyo, husahau kazi aliyotumwa kwenda kuitekeleza kwa yeye kuamua kufanya kazi yake mwenyewe. Yeye hujiingiza kwenye kazi nyingine anayoipenda mwenyewe.

Mtu huyo, hufanana na kitendo cha kumsukuma mtu aliyechuchumaa ambaye huishia kuanguka chini, kwa sababu naye hutumwa kitu na kwenda kimoja, bila kukitekeleza kile alichotumwa kukifanyia kazi. Ndiyo maana watu waliomtuma husema kwamba, ‘tumesukuma kijana aliyechuchumaa.’

Msemo huo, hufundisha watu juu ya kuyatimiza vizuri majukumu waliyotumwa kuyatekeleza, ili waweze kupata mafanikio mengi katika maisha yao.

ENGLISH: WE HAVE PUSHED A SQUATTING YOUNG MAN.

The source of this saying is pushing a young man who was squatting. This squatting young man will not have enough power to resist the push and therefore can easily fall down. To describe a scenario that relates to effortless winning in a certain competition, one can use the saying that ‘we have pushed a squatting young man.’

The saying can be compared to someone who was sent to do something and never came back to bring feedback. He/she is someone who appears to forget his/her responsibility. Such a person does things according to his/her wish. People of such behaviour are being compared to the act of pushing a squatting person who will end up falling down.

The saying teaches people how to properly fulfill the tasks they are assigned to carry out. This will enable them to have achievements in their lives.

Akahayile kenako, kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo agadumaga ugwiyumilija ulu obhandikaga makoye. Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agikolaga nu Mahewa uyo agatub’a mpaga unhong’ha unke, kunguno nuweyi adumile agwiyumilija umumakoye amadamu.

Mwanamume huyo, alijisikia njaa sana wakati wa kipindi cha njaa, akamua kumnyonya mke wake ziwa. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘umefika wakati ambao Mahewa alimnyonya ziwa mke wake.’

Msemo huo, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule ambaye hushindwa kuvumilia anapopata matatizo, katika maisha yake. Mtu huyo, hufanana na mahewa ambaye alijisikia njaa mpaka akamnyonya mke wake ziwa, kwa sabahu naye hawezi kuvumilia katika matatizo anayopata ndani ya maisha yake.

Mtu huyo, hushindwa kuwalea watoto wake vizuri, ili waweze kuvumilia matatizo ya maisha ya kila siku, kwa sababu ya maisha yake hayo. Watu wanaomfahamu mtu huyo, kwamba hawezi kuvumilia, hali ambayo humpelekea kushindwa kuyakabiri matatizo yake, huongea juu yake.  Ndiyo maana watu hao, husema kwamba, ‘umefika wakati ambao Mahewa alimnyonya ziwa mke wake.’

Msemo huo, hufundisha watu juu ya kuwa na uvumilivu wa kuwawezesha kuyakabiri vizuri matatozo yao, ili waweze kuwapa watoto wao, uwezo wa kutatua shida mbalimbali katika maisha yao kama watu wazima, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: I HAVE A RIDDLE – LET IT COME.

AS YOUNG AS I AM TO WHOM SHOULD I LAUGH – A COTTON FRUIT.

The source of this riddle is the cotton fruit. The cotton fruit when it is immature it doesn’t burst to release its wool because it is yet to mature. But when it is mature enough it bursts and releases its wool thus being compared to a person who laughs. This is why people are being warned against doing some things. They have to wait until the right time comes. Such people are warned using the riddle ‘as young as I am to whom should I laugh? – a cotton fruit’. This riddle can be compared to a person who has patience to wait until the right time to fulfill his/her duties comes. Such a person nurtures well his/her people until they are old enough to carry out their responsibilities, including marriage. And, marriage is reserved for adults, not children. Therefore, cotton fruit represents children who are yet to take responsibilities of adults. They have to wait until the time for them to take adult responsibilities comes.

This riddle teaches people about patience in raising their children. It includes good parenting style that can enable children to have societal acceptable morals.

Hunagwene abhanhu bhagiganilaga giki, ‘natali ndo giki nansekele nani?:- Nhob’o ya B’ulub’a.’

Ikalagu yiniyo, igalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo ali na wiyumilija bho gulindila mpaga lishige ligakanza lya gutumama nimo nhebhe, mukikalile kakwe. Uweyi agabhagukaja abhana bhakwe mpaga bhashiga ahikanza lya gutola, nulu gutolwa, kunguno adhebhile igiki abho bhagatolaga bhali bhanhu bhatale, idi bhadoo.

Abhana abhadoo bhikolile ni nhob’o ijo jitali ndagana, kunguno amasala gabho gatali ga nyanigini. Ndiyo maana watu huhadithiana kwamba, ‘bado mdogo hivi nimchekelee nani?: – tunda la pamba.’

Kitendawili hicho, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule ambaye ana uvumilivu wa kusubiri hadi ufike wakati sahihi wa kuyatekeleza majukumu yake, katika maisha yake. Yeye huwakuza watu wake vizuri hadi wanafikia umri wa kuyatelekeleza majukumu yao, yakiwemo yale ya kuolewa na kuoa, kwa sababu yeye anafahamu kwamba, wanaooana ni watu wazima, sio watoto.

ENGLISH: EVERYWHERE A FLY LANDS IT LEAVES ITS EGGS

The source of this saying is the life of a fly. Everywhere a fly lands it leaves eggs. These eggs can grow into larvae that can destroy something, for example, meat and other related things. To warn people against entertaining such insects, one can use the saying that ‘everywhere a fly lands it leaves its eggs/larvae.’

The saying can be compared to a person who is a liar in his or her life. This person is likely to affect family members by making false statements. In such a context of false statements, one can experience division among family members. Such a person who is a liar can be compared to a fly that always leaves impact wherever it lands.

This proverb teaches people to break the habit of lying in their lives. Rather, they have to be trusthworthy so that they can have peace with others in the society.
