Ulusumo lunulo lugalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo alinikujo lwa golecha bhutungulija nu bhutogwa bhokwe bho gubhitila imilimo iyo agayitaga duhu. Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agiitaga yose iyo ilimubhulagani bhokwe na kajile kakwe kunguno ya likujo lyakwe linilo umuwikaji bhokwe. Uweyi agasabhaga sabho ningi noyi ahakaya yakwe yiniyo kunguno ya likujo lyakwe linilo ilyaguitimija imilimo yakwe bho gwigulambija guitumama chiza, umuwikaji bhokwe bhunubho.

Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agikolaga nuyo otumamaga milimo yakwe gwingila diyu mpaka lyagagwa ilimi kunguno nuweyi agigulambijaga gutumama milimo yakwe mpaga osabha sabho ningi aha kaya yakwe yiniyo umuwikaji bhokwe. Uweyi alintongeji ntungulija uyo agabholekeja abhanhu bhakwe nzila ya wiza bho gutumama milimo chiza, adiogutumila mihayo duhu. Hunagwene agayombaga giki, “amiito galimiza gulebha imihayo.”

Ulusumo lunulo, lolanga bhanhu higulya ya bhutungilija na wigulambija bho gutumama imilimo midamu. Lubhalanga gudebha igiki mihayo duhu idadulile gubheja bhutungulija kugiki bhadule guyimalamaja bho miito gabho iyo bhagayiyombaga, umuwikaji bhobho.

SWAHILI: VITENDO NI BORA KULIKO MANENO.

Asili ya methali hii ilianzia kutoka kwa mkulima aliyeishi katika kijiji cha Sanjo. Mkulima huyo alikuwa akiamka mapema asubuhi na kuanza kufanya kazi kuanzia asubuhi hadi jioni kwa sababu alijua kwamba “matendo huzungumza zaidi kuliko maneno.” Ndiyo maana watu walipomuuliza sababu ya kufanya hivyo, alijibu kwa kusema kwamba, “matendo ni bora kuliko maneno.”

Methali hii hulinganishwa kwa mtu mwenye hekima ya kuthibitisha wema wake, uaminifu, upendo, au bidii kwa kupitia kile anachofanya badala ya kile anachosema tu. Mtu kama huyo hutimiza ahadi zake na kuonesha tabia njema kwa matendo ambayo huwatendea wengine kwa sababu ya hekima yake hiyo maishani mwake.  Yeye hutajirika sana katika familia yake kwa sababu ya hekima yake hiyo ya kutekeleza anachosema kwa kufanya kazi kwa bidii katika maisha yake hayo ya kila siku.

Mtu huyo hufanana na yule mkulima aliyefanya kazi zake kuanzia asubuhi hadi jioni kwa sababu naye pia hufanya kazi zake kwa bidii hadi kufikia hatua ya kuwa tajiri katika familia yake. Yeye ni kiongozi anayewahudumia watu kwa uaminifu badala ya kutoa ahadi tupu. Ndiyo maana husema kwamba “matendo ni bora kuliko maneno.”

Methali hii huwafundisha watu kuhusu: uwajibikaji, uaminifu, kuwa na bidii ya kufanya kazi ngumu. Kuelewa kuwa maneno pekee hayawezi kujenga uaminifu isipokuwa yanaungwa mkono na matendo. Kwa hiyo, watu wanapaswa kuishi kulingana na yale wanayoyasema na kuyatekeleza yale wanayohubiri.

ENGLISH: ACTIONS ARE BETTER THAN WORDS

The original of this proverb started from a farmer who lived at Sanjo village. This farmer used to wake up and start working from morning to evening because he knew that “actions speak louder than words.” That why when people asked him a reason of doing so, he answered “actions are better than words.”

This proverb is equaled to a person who has wisdom of proving his goodness, honesty, love, or hard work through what he does instead of what he merely says. Such a person fulfills promises and demonstrates character by deeds which he does to others because of his wisdom in life. He becomes so rich at his family because of his wisdom of practicing what he says by working hard in his daily life.

This person resembles a farmer who did his works from morning to evening because he also works hard to the point of becoming rich at his family. He is a leader who serves people faithfully instead of making empty promises.That is why he says “actions are better than words.”

This proverb teaches people about: honesty, responsibility, faithfulness, and hard work. Words alone cannot build trust unless they are supported by actions. People should live according to what they say and practice what they preach.

James 2:17 “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

Hunagwene umunhu nsabhi owilagwa giki, “uyuja nang’ho gujupungugijiwa kugiki uyutob’ela godi ya gugwinha ikujo.”

Akahayile kenako kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu nsabhi uyo alina witegeleja bho gwicholela sabho na kujitumila bho wizanholo chiza umuwikaji bhokwe bhunubho. Umunhu ng’wunuyo agigulambijaga gutumama milimo yakwe chiza mpaka opandika sabho ja gudula gubhambilija bhanhu bhingi kunguno ya witegeleja bhokwe bhunubho umukikalile kakwe. Uweyi agadujaga gwambililja bhanhu bhingi umuchalo jakwe kunguno ya witegeleja bho gutumama milimo yakwe mpaga opandika sabho jagugunana bhiye umuwikaji bhokwe bhunubho.

KISWAHILI: UWE UNAENDA NA WEWE KUPUNZIWA ILI UWE UNATOZWA KODI UPATE RIDHIKI.

Chanzo cha msemo huo huangalia kipindi cha ukoloni. Kipindi hicho, kilintaka mtu aliyekuwa na ng’ombe kuwapeleka ng’ombe wake kwa kiongozi ili wakapunguzwe na kubhaki nao wachache. Hivyo basi, mtu yule ambaye hukuwa na ng’ombe aligawiwa ili naye aweze kuwa tajiri wa kulipa kodi ya kumpatia heshima. Ndiyo maana mtu aliyekuwa na ng’ombe aliambiwa kwamba, “uwe unaenda na wewe kupunguziwa ili uwe unatozwa kodi ya kukupatia heshima.”

Msemo huo, hulinganiswa kwa mtu tajiri mwenye umakini wa kutafuta mali na kuzitumia kwa ukarimu wa kumpatia heshima maishani mwake. Mtu huyo hujibidisha kufanya kazi zake vizuri mpaka anapata mali za kumwezesha kusaidia watu wengi kwa sababu ya umakini na ukarimu wake huo katika maisha yake hayo. Yeye hufanikiwa kuwasaidia watu wengi katika kijiji chake kwa sababu ya umakini na ukarimu wake huo katika maisha yake hayo.

Mtu huyo, hufanana na yule tajiri wa ng’ombe aliyewasaidia wenzake mpaka nao wakatajirika, kwa sababu naye pia huutumia utajiri wake kwa kuwasaidia wenzake maishani mwake. Ndiyo maana yeye humwambia kila mmoja wao kwamba, “uwe unaenda na wewe kupunguziwa ili uwe unatozwa kodi ya kukupatia heshima.”

Msemo huo, huwafundisha watu juu ya kuwa na umakini wa kujitafutia mali za kuwawezesha kutumia katika kuwasaidia wenzao vizuri, ili waweze kuzilea vyema familia zao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: YOU SHOULD ALLOW YOUR WEALTH TO BE REDUCED SO THAT YOU MAY PAY THE TAX OF RESPECT.

The origin of this saying dates back to the colonial period. During that time, people who owned many cattle were required to surrender some of their cows to local leaders so that the wealth could be shared with those who had none. In this way, poorer people could also own cattle, become economically stable, and be able to contribute taxes that earned them dignity and respect within society. Because of this practice, wealthy people were advised that, “You should allow your wealth to be reduced so that you may pay the tax of respect.”

This saying is used to describe a wealthy person who works hard to gain riches and then uses those riches generously for the benefit of others. Such a person understands that true respect does not come merely from possessing wealth, but from using it wisely and compassionately to help fellow human beings. Through seriousness, hard work, and generosity, that person succeeds in supporting many people within the community.

This person resembles a rich man who helped his companions until they also became prosperous, because he used his wealth to uplift others in his life. That is why he encourages people by saying, “you should allow your wealth to be reduced so that you may pay the tax of respect.”

This saying teaches people to work seriously in search of wealth so that they may use it to help others, support their families, and improve the well-being of their communities.

Hunagwene abhanhu bhagiganilaga bho guyomba giki “ab’ob’ab’ilingagwa bizaga pye na ng’home – busiga buholile.”

Ikalagu yiniyo, ikagalenganijiyagwa kubhanhu abho bhalina masala gagwiyambilija chiza ulu ng’wichabho obhabhilingaga kunimo gokwe, umukikalile kabho. Abhanhu bhenabho bhagib’ilingaga gwiyambilija gutumama milimo yabho bhuli ng’wene obhuka na jitumamilo jakwe bhagatumama milimo yabho bho ng’wigwano gutale, kunguno ya masala gabho agawiza genayo, umuwikaji bhobho. Abhoyi bhagapandikaga sabho ningi bhuli ng’wene aha kaya yakwe kunguno ya masala gabho genayo aga ng’wigano go gwiyambilija gutumama milimo yabho chiza chiniko, umuwikaji bhobho bhunubho.

Kitendawili hicho, huangalia mtama uliotoa masuke yake. Mtama huyo, hutoa masuke ambayo huonekana kama fimbo yenye rundu kwa juu kwa sababu ya kuendana yote vizuri hivyo. Ndiyo maana watu huhadithiana kwa kusema kwamba, “walioalikwa wamefika wote na rungu – masuke ya mtama.”

Kitendawili hicho, hulinganishwa kwa watu wenye akili za kusaidiana vizuri wanapoalikwa na mwenzao kwenda kumsaidia kufanya kazi yake, katika maisha yao. Watu hao hualikana pamoja kwenda kuyatekeleza majukumu yao kwa kusaidiana ambapo kila mmoja hubeba kitendea kazi kinachofaa kwa kazi hiyo, kwa sababu ya akili zao hizo zenye uelewano wa kusaidia vizuri katika kazi zao, maishani mwao. Wao hupata mali nyingi za kutumia kila mmoja kwenye familia yake kwa sababu ya ushirikiano wao huo mzuri, katika maisha yao.

Watu hao hufanana na ule mtama ambao hutoa masuke yanayoendana vizuri, kwa sababu nao husaidiana vizuri katika kuyatekeleza vizuri majukumu yao kila wanapoalikwa na mwenzao, maishani mwao. Ndiyo maana watu huwaongelea kwamba, “walioalikwa wamefika wote na rungu – masuke ya mtama.”

Kitendawili hicho, hufundisha watu juu ya kuwa na akili za kuwawezesha kushirikiana vizuri, katika kuyatekeleza vizuri majukumu yao, ili waweze kupata maendeleo mengi katika familia zao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: I HAVE A RIDDLE — LET IT COME.
ALL THE INVITED HAVE ARRIVED WITH THE CLUB – MILLET STALK.

This riddle refers to millet when it has produced its stalk. A millet stalk produces clubs that are tightly bound together, forming a shape like a stick with a clustered head. Because the grains fit together so well, people use this image when telling stories, saying: All the invited have arrived with the club — the millet stalk.”

This riddle is compared to people who have good understanding and wisdom, and who help one another when they are invited by their partners to work together in life. Such people invite one another to carry out their responsibilities, and each person comes prepared with the right tool for the task. Their intelligence enables them to cooperate well and support each other in their work.

Through this cooperation, they gain prosperity that benefits their families, because they live in unity and mutual support. These people are like millet ears that grow closely together on one stalk, strong and productive because of their togetherness. That is why people speak about them by saying:
“All the invited have arrived with the club — the millet stalk.”

This riddle teaches people to have wisdom and understanding so they can cooperate well in fulfilling their responsibilities. Through such cooperation, they achieve progress and success in their families and in their lives.

Ikalagu yiniyo, igalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo agagadimilaga chiza amalagilo ga bhatale bhakwe, umukikalile kakwe. Umunhu ng’wunuyo agagikalanaga amalagilo genayo bho gubhalanga abhanhu bhakwe gwikala chiza na bhichabho, kunguno ya bhutungilija bhokwe bhunubho, umuwikaji bhokwe. Uweyi agikalaga na bhuyegi bhutale aha kaya yakwe kunguno ya bhutungilija bhokwe bhunubho ubho gugikalana chiza amalagilo ga bhatale bhakwe bhenabho umukikalile kakwe kenako.

Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agikolaga numongo uyo gugajaga bhutongi bho nduhu ugushoka inuma, kunguno nuweyi agagikalanaga chiza amalagilo ga bhatale bhakwe umuwikaji bhokwe. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagang’wilaga giki, “osiminza noyi aliyo adulab’ulaga – Mongo.”

Ikalagu yiniyo, yalanga bhanhu higulya ya gub’iza na bhutungilija bho gugadimila chiza amalagilo ga ng’wa Umulungu, kugiki bhadule kupandika mpango ya gwikala na bhuyegi bho gubhashisha Ng’wigulu, umuwikaji bhobho bhunubho.

Kitendawali hicho huongelea uendaji wa maji ya mto. Maji hayo ya mto huenda mbele tu kwa sababu ya kutokea mlimani kuelekea mtelemkoni. Yenyewe huwa hayarudi nyuma kwa sababu yanatokea mlimani kushuka chiza, siyo kupanda juu. Ndiyo maana watu huhadithiana kwamba, “ametembea mno lakini haangalii nyuma – mto.”

Kitendawili hicho hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule ambaye huyaiishi vizuri maagizo ya wakubwa wake, katika maisha yake. Mtu huyo, huyaishi maagizo hayo ya wakubwa wake kwa kuwafundisha watu wake namna ya kuishi vizuri na wenzao, kwa sababu ya uaminifu wake huo, maishani mwake. Yeye huishi kwa furaha kubwa katika familia yake kwa sababu ya uaminifu wake huo wa kuyaishi vizuri maagizo hayo ya wakubwa wake, katika maisha yake hayo.

Mtu huyo, hufanana na yale maji yaendayo mbele bila kurudi nyuma, kwa sababu naye huyaishi vizuri maagizo ya wakubwa wake, maishani mwake. Ndiyo maana watu humwambia kwamba, “ametembea mno lakini haangalii nyuma – mto.”

Kitendawili hicho, hufundisha watu juu ya kuwa na uaminifu wa kuyaishi vizuri maagizo ya Mungu, ili waweze kupata Baraka za kuishi kwa furaha ya kuwafikisha Mbinguni.

ENGLISH: I HAVE A RIDDLE – LET IT COME.

HE HAS WALKED A LOT BUT HE DOESN’T LOOK BACK – A RIVER.

This riddle talks about a movement of river water. This river water only moves forward because it comes from the mountain towards the slope. It itself never goes back because it comes from the mountain going down, not upwards. That is why people say that, “he has walked a lot but he does not look back – a river.”

This riddle is compared to a person who lives by observing instructions of his superiors in his life. This person puts into practices instructions of his superiors by teaching his people how to live well with their family members, because of his loyalty in life. He lives with great happiness in his family because of his loyalty to nicely living within the instructions of elders in his life.

This person is like that river water which moves forward without going back, because he also lives well the instructions of his directors in his life. That is why people say to him that, “He has walked far but he does not look back – a river.”

This riddle teaches people about being faithful enough to nicely live according to God’s commandments, so that they can receive blessings of living happily to the point of entering Heaven.

Ikalagu yiniyo yiholelile fugo iyo ili nungu ya guzugila bhugali. Ifugo yiniyo jili ginhu ijo jigatumamilagwa nimo bhuli lushigu bho nduhu gwisuyijiwa kunguno ya gubhazugila jiliwa abhanhu abho bhatub’ile.

Unzugi obhugali agatumilaga ndinho obhiza guti giki aliitula inungu yiniyo ulu alibhuzuga ubhugali bhunubho. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagiganilaga giki, “mama agatulagwa ng’home gwa bhuli makanza aliyo adatolokaga – fugo ya guzugila.”

Ikalagu yiniyo igalenganijiyagwa kuli ngikulu uyo agiyumilaga gutumama milimo mingi ya gubhambilija abhizukulu bhakwe umukikalile kakwe. Ungikulu ng’wunuyo agigulambijaga kutumama milimo ya gumpandikila jiliwa ja gubhalisha abhizukulu bhakwe bhenabho kunguno ya wiyumilija bhokwe bhunubho, umuwikaji bhokwe. Uweyi agapandikaga sabho na jiliwa jingi aha kaya yakwe yiniyo kunguno ya wiyumilija bhokwe ubho gutumama milimo yakwe chiza bhunubho, umukikalile kakwe.

Ungikuku ng’wunuyo, agikolaga ni fugo iyo yazugilagwa jiliwa bhuli lushugu bho nduhu ugwifula, kunguno nuweyi agiyumilijaga gutumama milimo ya gubhapandikila jiliwa abhizugukulu bhakwe mpaka ujipandika na gubhazugila chiza, umuwikaji bhokwe. Hunagwene abhizukulu bhakwe bhenabho bhagayombaga giki, “mama agatulagwa ng’home gwa bhuli makanza aliyo adatolokaga – fugo ya guzugila.”

BIBI HUPIGWA RUNGU KILA WAKATI LAKINI HATOROKI – CHUNGU CHA KUPIKIA.

Kitendawili hicho huongelea chungu cha kupikia ugali. Chungu hicho ni kitu cha kufanyia kazi kila siku bila ya kupumzika kwa sababu ya kuwapikiwa chakula watu wanaohitaji kula.

Mpishi wa ugali hutumia mwiko ambao humuonesha kama anakipiga chungu hicho anapopika chakula hicho. Ndiyo maana watu huhadithiana kwa kusema kwamba “bibi hupigwa rungu kila wakati lakini hatoroki – chungu cha kupikia.”

Kitendawili hicho hulinganishwa kwa bibi yule ambaye huvumilia kufanya kazi nyingi za kuwasaidia wajukuu zake, katika maisha yake. Bibi huyo, hujibidisha kufanya kazi za kumpatia chakula cha kuwalisha wajukuu zake hayo kwa sababu ya uvumilivu wake huo, maishani mwake. Yeye hupata mali na chakula kingi katika familia yake hiyo kwa sababu ya uvumilivu wake huo wa kujibidisha kufanya kazi zake vizuri, katika maisha yake.

Bibi huyo, hufanana na kile chungu cha kupikia chakula kila siku bila ya kupumzika, kwa sababu naye huvumilia kufanya kazi za kumpatia chakula cha kutosha kuwalisha wajukuu zake hao mpaka anakipata chakula hicho na kuwapikia watu wake hao vizuri, maishani mwake. Ndiyo maana wajukuu zake hao husema kwamba, “bibi hupigwa rungu kila wakati lakini hatoroki – chungu cha kupikia.”

Kitendawili hicho hufundisha watu juu ya kujibidisha kufanya kazi zao kwa uvumilivu mkubwa ili waweze kupata chakula cha kutosha kuwalisha watu wao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: I HAVE A RIDDLE – LET IT COME.

THE GRANDMOTHER IS BEATEN EVERY TIME BUT SHE DOESN’T ESCAPE – THE COOKING POT.

The overhead riddle talks about a pot which is used for cooking stiff food. This pot is something which people use every day without letting it to rest because they utilize it for cooking food which people need to eat.

The stiff food cook uses a special stick for hitting the pot while cooking the food. That is why people tell each other stories by saying that “the grandmother is beaten all the time but she does not escape – the cooking pot.”

This riddle is equated to a grandmother who endures doing many tasks enough to help her grandchildren, in her life. This person works hard enough to provide her grandchildren with food for feeding them because of her endurance, in her life. She earns a lot of wealth and food in her family because of her endurance in doing her jobs well in her life.

This grandmother is like a pot which cooks use for cooking food every day without letting it to rest, because she also endures working hard enough to provide her grandchildren with food which they need for running their lives. That is why her grandchildren say that, “the grandmother is beaten every time but she does not escape – the cooking pot.”

This riddle teaches people about working hard enough to fulfill their works with great patience so that they can get enough food for feeding their people in their lives.
