Imbuki ya kahayile kenako, yilolile sulumida. Isulumida yiniyo, lililiginhu lya gub’eja bho bhulolo, nulu b’o gupunza b’o linti. Ilyoyi ligatumamilagwa b’o gug’wisija ng’ombe minzi. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘sulumida yeniyi yafula minzi.’

Akahayile kenako, kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo ali nsabhi, umukikalile kakwe. Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agabhizaga na mang’ombe mingi, mbuli ni ng’holo najo jili ningi. Ahakaya yake, jilihoyi na ngoko, mbata na majiliwa nago gali mingi.

Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agiikolaga ni sulumida iyo yafula minzi, kunguno nuweyi ojikwija sabho jinijo, aha ng’wakwe. Uweyi usabha kunguno ya wigulambija bho gutumama milimo yakwe.

Agajitumilaga isabho jakwe bho gutuula bhatumami umumilimo, kugiki adule gubhalanga abhanhu bhenabho higulya ya wigulambija bho gutumama milimo yabho chiza.

Uweyi agabhagalilaga chiza abhatumami bhakwe bho gubhinha jiliwa jawiza na minzi, kunguno ojikwija isabho. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘sulumida yeniyi yafula minzi.’

KISWAHILI: HORI HILI LIMETOSHEKA MAJI.

Chanzo cha msemo huo, chaangalia kifaa cha kunyweshea mifugo. Kifaa hicho, ni kitu kinachotengenezwa kwa tope au mti (yaani ni gongo lililochongwa vizuri). Chenyewe hutumiwa kwa kunyweshea ng’ombe maji. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘Hori hili limetosheka maji.’

Msemo huyo, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule ambaye ni tajiri wa mali nyingi katika maisha yake. Mtu huyo, ana mifugo kama vile: ng’ombe wengi, hali kadhalika mbuzi, na kondoo. Yeye ana kuku, bata na chakula kwa wingi katika familia yake.

Mtu huyo, hufanana na hori lilitosheka maji, kwa sababu naye ana mali nyingi nyumbani kwake. Yeye alitajirika kwa sababu ya kujibidisha kufanya kazi zake vizuri. Mtu huyo, pia huitumia mali yake hiyo, kwa kuweka vibarua katika kazi zake, ili aweze kuwafundisha watu juu ya kujibidisha kuzifanya kazi zao.

Yeye huwatunza vizuri pia wafanyakazi wake, kwa kuwapatia chakula kizuri na maji ya kutosha, kwa sababu ameshatajirika maishani mwake. Ndiyo  maana watu husema kwamba, ‘hori hili limetosheka maji.’

Msemo huo, hufundisha watu juu ya kujibidisha kutafuta mali kwa kufanya kazi zao kwa bidii kubwa, na kuzitumia vizuri wanapozipata, ili waweze kuzitunza vizuri familia zao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: THIS TROUGH IS FULL OF WATER.

The source of this saying is a trouph animals use to drink water. This trouph is made up of wood or mud. People can put water in it for animals (for example, cows) to drink. To describe this trouph, people came with this saying that ‘This trouph is full of water.’

This saying can be compared to the richest person in a certain society. This person might be having a lot of wealth: cows, goats, sheep, chicken, ducks, etc. Like a trouph full of water, this person will appear as someone who is self-sufficient in his/her life because of his/her possessions. This persons’s possessions can be obtained through hard work. This person is also credited to taking good care of his/her stuff by providing them with all the necessities in life; food, water and shelter.

This saying teaches people about hard work. For one to become rich, he/she has to work hard.

590. BHANANG’WELI BHADI NA LULASI.

Imbuki ya kahayile kenako, yilolile bhugaiwa bho lulasi bho bhanang’weli. Ulusi lunulo, bhuli wiyumilija bho gudula gugamala chiza amakoye ulu gigelaga.

Kuyiniyo lulu, abhanang’weli bhenabho, bhali bhanhu abho b’adi na wiyumilija umubhuli mhayo gwene. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘bhanang’weli bhadi na lulasi.’

Akahayile kenako, kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo adumilile ugwiyumilija ulu opandikaga makoye, umukikalile kakwe. Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agaminyikaga umo moyo gokwe, ulu opandikaga nulu ikoye idoo duhu, kunguno ya gubhiza adimpanuku umu moyo gokwe.

Uweyi adulile nulu guduma gulya jiliwa, kunguno ya gugwigwa mhayo ndoo, uyo uganyanjaga guti na bhanang’weli abho hadina wiyumilija nulu hadoo, umumayange gabho.

Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agongejaga makoye agagunhanghana ukubhiye, ulu gigelaga manyange, umuwikaji bhobho. Abhanhu abho agikalaga nabho, bhagang’wilaga giki wiyumilije, kugiki oye ugubhayanja abhiye, umuwikaji bhobho bhunubho. Hunagwene abhanhu bhenabho, bhagayombaga giki, ‘bhanang’weli bhadi na lulasi.’

KISWAHILI: WATU WA MAGHARIBI HAWANA UVUMILIVU.

Chanzo cha msemo huo, chaangalia kukosa kwa uvumilivu kwa watu wa magharibi. Watu hao hawana uvumilivu wa kuwawezesha kuyamaliza vizuri matatizo wanayoyapata hata kama yatakuwa madogo kiasi gani. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘watu wa magharibi hawana uvumilivu.’

Msemo huo, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule ambaye hushindwa kuvumilia anapopata matatizo mbalimbali, katika maisha yake. Mtu huyo, huumia moyoni mwake, akipata tatizo hata kama ni dogo namna gani. Yeye huhangaika sana akipata shida kama wanavyohangaika wale watu wa magharibi.

Mtu huyo, huongeza shida kwa wenzake, yakitokea matatizo kama yale ya msiba, ambao hufanya kazi ya kumtuliza, ili aache kuwahangaisha wenzake hao, maishani mwao. Ndiyo maana watu hao, husema kwamba, ‘watu wa magharibi hawana uvumilivu.’

 Msemo huo, hufundisha watu juu ya kuwa na uvumilivu mkubwa, wanapopata matatizo, katika maisha yao, ili waweze kuziendeleza vizuri familia zao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: THE PEOPLE FROM THE WEST OF TANZANIA HAVE NO PATIENCE.

The source of this saying comes from lack of patience among people from the Western part of Tanzania. These people are said to have no patience when it comes to solving their own problems, regardless of the type of the problem. This behaviour of the people from the Western part of Tanzania made people to come up with the saying that ‘The people from the Western part of Tanzania have no patience.’

This saying can be compared to a person who fails to cope with various problems in his or her life. Such a person will tend to suffer all the time, regardless whether the problem is serious or not.

 The saying teaches people about having a lot of patience when they have problems in their lives. This will help them to stay calmly in their families.

Imbuki ya kalagu yiniyo, yililola ginhu ijijigitanagwa lusunda. Ulusunda lunulo luli ginhu ja gutulila jiseme ulo lugatungilagwa ng’wigulya ya numba, umukaya. Uloyi ulu lukumiwa lugandyaga gwisugusa (gwifilinja) mpaga ku ikanza ilihu. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagiganilaga giki, ‘nakadima kinekeja:- Kalusunda.’

Ikalagu yiniyo, igalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo agakumiwagwa hadoo duhu wiza nzule, nulu opelana, umukikalile kakwe. Umunhu ng’wunuyo, adadilaga ugwikenya na bhanhu, kunguno ya bhujidakumiwa bhokwe bhunubho.

Uweyi agikolaga nu lusunda, kunguno nuweyi agapelana wangu ulu okumiwa nulu hadoo duhu nabhiye. Abhanhu abho agidumaga nabho, nose bhandebha igiki aling’wangu upelana. Hunagwene bhagiganilaga giki, ‘nakadima kinekeja:- Kalusunda.’

Ikalagu yiniyo, yalanga bhanhu higulya ya gubhiza na wiyumilija ubho gubhambilija ugubhuleka ubhupelanu bho sagara, umukikalile kabho, kugiki bhadule gwikala chiza na bhichobho, umuwikaji bhobho.

Chanzo cha kitendawili hicho, kinaangalia kitu kichoitwa kibembea. Kibembea hicho, huwa kinafungwa kwa kunig’inizwa juu ya nyumba kwa ndani, ambacho hutengenezwa kwa nyuzi za mkonge. Kibembea hiyo, mtu akikigusa huanza kuchezacheza (kujiviringisha) kwa muda mrefu. Ndiyo maana watu huhadithina kwamba, ‘nimekashika kakabembea: kibembea.’

Kitendawili hicho, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule ambaye akiguswa kidogo tu hukasilika, katika maisha yake. Mtu huyo, hakawii kugombana na watu kwa sababu ya kutokuguswa kwake huko.

Yeye hufanana na kibembea hicho cha kuning’inizia vyombo, kwa sababu naye ukasilika upesi akiguswa hata kidogo tu, na wenzake. Watu wanaokosana naye, mwishowe hufahamu kwamba, mtu huyo ni mwepezi mno kukasilika. Ndiyo maana watu hao huhadithiana kwamba, ‘nimekashika kakabembea: kibembea.’

Kitendawili hicho, hufundisha watu juu ya kuwa na uvumilivu wa kuwasaidia kuacha hasira za hovyo, katika maisha yao, ili waweze kuishi vizuri na wenzao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: I HAVE RIDDLE – LET IT COME.

THE MOMENT I TOUCHED IT, IT BEGAN SWINGING – “LUSUNDA”.

The source of this riddle is a certain object called lusunda in Kisukuma. This object is made of woven rope always used to hang food stuff in the house (especially in grass-thatched houses) in order to protect that from being eaten by rats and cats. This lusunda tends to swing around when one touches it. This is why people came with the riddle that ‘the moment I touched it, it began swinging – lusunda.

This riddle can be compared to a person who reacts harshly when touched by someone else. Such a person is likely to cause a lot of chaos just because of being touched by someone. People of this behaviour don’t want to be disturbed.

This riddle teaches people about patience. It is through patience where one can have tolerance and being able to work together with other members in a given society.

Imbuki ya kahayile kenako, yingilile kumiito ga ng’wa Jiminogeni. UJiminogeni ng’wunuyo, oli munhu o miito mab’i, kunguno ya  bhushiya bhokwe. Aho adinading’wa oyombaga giki, ‘duguminogaga ndafu’ (ginhu) jinogoleku.

Aliyo lulu, oho oding’wa umunhu ng’wunuyo, agatulwa noyi na guliwa b’ushiya. Hunagwene abhanbhu bhagayombaga mpaga lelo ukubhanhu abho bhali na nhungwa ja bhubhiya, giki ‘ugujib’ona ijijiganhuuluja Jiminogeni.’

Akahayile kenako, kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo agitaga mihayo ya bhubhi, guti ya bhushiya yiniyo, umukikalile kakwe. Umunhu ng’wunuyo, alemile ugubhigwa abhanhu abho bhagang’wilaga giki, ajileke inhungwa jinijo, ija gubhitila mihayo ya bhubhi abhiye.

Uweyi agikolaga nu jiminogeni, kunguno nuweyi agiitaga imahayo yiniyo iyabhubhi. Abhanhu abho bhajidebhile inhungwa jakwe jinijo, bhagang’wilaga giki, ‘ugujib’ona ijijiganhuuluja Jiminogeni.’

Chanzo cha msemo huo, chatokea kwenye matendo ya mtu aliyeitwa Jiminogeni. Jiminogeni huyo, alikuwa mtu mwenye matendo maovu yakiwemo yale ya uzinzi. Alipokuwa bado hajakamatwa alikuwa akisema, ‘tunatafuta dafu, (kitu) laini.’

Lakini Jiminogeni huyo, alipokamatwa alipigwa sana, na kutozwa faini ya uzinzi. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwa watu wenye tabia kama hiyo hata leo, kwamba, ‘utakiona kilichomfanya jiminogeni alie.’

 Msemo huo, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule ambaye hutenda maovu kama yale ya uzinzi, katika maisha yake. Mtu huyo, hataki kuonywa na wenzake juu ya kuiacha tabia yake hiyo mbaya.

Yeye hufanana na Jiminogeni, kwa sababu naye hutenda maovu kama hayo katika maisha yake. Watu wanaoifahamu tabia yake hiyo ya kutenda maovu, humwambia kwamba, ‘utakiona kilichomfanya jiminogeni alie.’

Msemo huo, hufundisha watu juu ya kuacha matendo maovu yakiwemo yale ya uzinzi, na mengine yanayofanana na hayo, katika maisha yao, ili waweze kuishi kwa amani na wenzao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: YOU WILL FACE WHAT MADE JIMINOGENI CRY.

The source of this saying is the actions of a man called Jiminogeni. This man was labelled my villagers as someone who is bad mannered. He could engage in immoral relationships like fornication. Before being caught red handed for his corrupt behaviour, he was boasting himself that he lives through eating “soft things”.

One day it happened that Jiminogeni was caught red handedly by people who disapproved of his behaviour. He was beaten off and fined for adultery. This scenario led to the formulation of the saying that ‘you will face what made Jiminogeni cry’ as a warning to others who have similar unacceptable behaviour.

 This saying can be compared to a person who commits immorality such as adultery in his/her life. This person does not want to be warned by his/her colleagues to stop his/her bad behaviour. He/she is like Jiminogeni who was adamant to accept people’s advice.

The saying teaches people to stop evil practices such as fornication, and the likes, in their lives.

Ikalagu yiniyo, igalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo agahadikijaga bhanhu gutumama milimo iyo ibhakilile. Umunhu ng’wunuyo, adulile nulu gubhinha nimo bhanigini, uyo gugatumamagwa na bhanhu abho bhalibhatale.

Uweyi agikolaga nu guhadikija kulinha ahakaswa, akokadina nguzu, kunguno nuwei agabhinhaga milimo abhanhu abho bhadina nguzu ijaguitumamila imilimo yiniyo. Hunagwene abhanhu bhang’wilaga bho gwiganila giki, ‘kadanda kadanda kadalinhagwa:- kaswa.’

KADANDA KADANDA HAKAKWEWI: – UNYASI.

Chanzo cha kitendawili hicho, chaangalia nguvu za unyasi. Unyasi huo, huwa haina nguvu, kwa sababu ya ulaini wake. Wenyewe hata ulefuke kiasi gani, hauwezi kupata uimara wa kumwezesha mtu kuukwea. Ndiyo maana watu huhadithiana kwamba, ‘kadanda kadanda hakakwewi:- unyasi.’

Kitendawili hicho, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule ambaye hulazimisha watu kufanya kazi ambazo hawana uwezo nazo.  Mtu huyo, huweza hata kuwapa watoto kazi ambayo inatakiwa kufanywa na watu wazima.

Yeye hufanana na kitendo cha mtu kulazimisha kukwea unyasi, ambao hauna nguvu za kumbeba, kwa sababu naye huwalazimisha watu kufanya kazi ambazo hawana uwezo wa kuzitekeleza. Ndiyo maana watu humwambia mtu huyo, kwa huhadithiana kwamba, ‘kadanda kadanda hakakwewi:- unyasi.’

Kitendawili hicho, hufundisha watu juu ya kufanya kazi zile ambazo wanauwezo nazo, na kuacha tabia ya kuwapatia watu wao kazi zilizowazidi nguvu, ili waweze kuishi vizuri na wenzao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: I HAVE RIDDLE – LET IT COME.

KADANDA KADANDA IS NOT CLIMBED- GRASS.

The source of this riddle is the strength of grass. The grass is always weak for a person to climb. However much one can struggle, he/she cannot succeed to climb grass. To justify this impossibility, people came with the riddle ‘kadanda kadanda is not climbed – grass.’

This riddle can be compared to a person who forces people to perform tasks that they are not capable of. The person may give children the work that even adults cannot manage to do it. Such a person can be likened to a person who forces to climb grass that cannot carry a person.

This riddle teaches people about doing works that they are capable of. They should avoid giving people tasks which they cannot manage. In so doing, they will be able to have respect and harmony with other people in a given society.
