314. KAYA NG’HULU IDAGAIYAGWA IB’ELELE

Imbuki ya lusumo lunulo yinginllile kukalang’hanile ka kaya nhale iyo ilinib’elele. Ikaya yiniyo igalang’hanagwa bho gubhalisha jiliwa abhanhu bhayo. Ilib’eleila linilo, jilijiseme ja gutuulila jiliwa, ijo jidulile gubhalisha, bhuli lushigu, abhanhu bha kaya yiniyo. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘kaya ng’hulu idagaiyagwa ib’elele.’

Ulusumo lunulo lugalenganijiyagwa kubhanhu abho bhagajilang´hanaga chiza ijiliwa ja gudula gubhalisha abhanhu bhabho. Abhanhu bhenabho bhagabhalangaga bhutumami bho milimo abhanhu bhabho, ni nzila ijagujituula ijiliwa jinijo, kugiki jidizub’ipa. Ikaya ja bhanhu bhenabho, jigabhizaga na jiliwa bhuli makanza, kunguno ya bhutumami bho milimo na bhulang´hani wiza bho jiliwa jabho jinijo. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki ´kaya ng´hulu idagaiyagwa ib´elele.´º

KISWAHILI: FAMILIA KUBWA HAIKOSI GHALA

Chanzo cha methali hiyo chatokea kwenye utunzaji wa familia kubwa ambayo ina ghala. Familia hiyo hutunzwa kwa kuwalisha watu wake chakula. Ghala hilo ni chombo cha kutunzia chakula kiwezacho kuwalisha, kila siku, watu walioko kwenye familia hiyo. Ndiyo maana, watu husema kwamba, ´familia kubwa haikosi ghala.´

Methali hiyo hulinganishwa kwa watu ambao huwatunza vizuri watu wao, kwa kukitunza chakula cha kuweza kuwalisha watu wao hao. Watu hao huwafundisha pia watu wao, namna ya kufanya kazi kwa bidii na namna ya kuyatunza mazao wayapatayo, ili yasiharibike. Familia za watu hao, huwa na chakula cha kutosha kila wakati, kwa sababu ya bidii yao ya kufanya kazi, na kukitunza chakula kile wakipatacho. Ndiyo maana, watu husema kwamba, ´familia kubwa haikosi ghala.´

Methali hiyo hufundisha watu juu ya kufanya kazi za kuwapatia mahitaji yao, yakiwemo yale ya chakula, na kukitunza chakula hicho, ili watu wao wasife kwa sababu ya njaa.

ENGLISH: A BIG FAMILY MUST HAVE A GRANARY

This proverb comes from the way a large family is managed in terms of food. Such family must have a granary to keep food for its people.The granary keeps food that can feed the people of that family every day. That is why people say that, “a big family must have a granary.”

The proverb relates to people who take good care of their families by preserving food for their people. These people also teach their people how to work hard and how to take care of the crops they produce so that they will not be damaged. The families of these people always have enough food to eat because of their hard work and they keep well the food they have. That is why people say, “a big family must have a granary.”

The proverb teaches people about working hard to meet their basic needs including food so that their people cannot die of hunger.

313. WAGOBYA NILO (B’ULILO)

Imbuki ya kahayile kenako yingilile kubhuchoji bho jiliwa. Ijiliwa jinijo jigategagwa, guti ndimu nulo ndilo. Uluojigobya unchoji ojo ng’wunuyo agayegaga, uweyi kihamo na bhiye. Hunagwene abhiye bhagang’wilaga giki, ‘wagobya nilo (b’ulilo).’

Akahayile kenako kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo opandikaga milimo ya gung’wenhela jiliwa. Umunhu ng’wunuyo agayegaga noyi ulu oyipandika imilimo yiniyo, kunguno ya b’upandiki bhokwe, bho aho ng’wagulila ijiliwa. Abhazenganwa bhakwe nabho bhagayegaga ugumona ng’wichabho opandikaga aho ng’ wagulila ijiliwa. Hunagwene abhanhu bhenabho bhagang’wilaga giki, ‘wagobya nilo (b’ulilo).

Akahayile kenako kalanga bhanhu higulya ya guchola milimo ya gubhenhela jiliwa, na guyega kihamo ulu bhayipandika imilimo yiniyo.

KISWAHILI: UMEKAMATA PA KULIA

Chanzo cha msemo huo chatokea kwenye utafutaji wa chakula. Chakula hicho hupatikana kwa njia mbalimbali zikiwemo zile za kutafuta kazi, kuvua samaki, kuwinda wanyama na kuwatega kwa mtego. Akipata chakula hicho mtu huyo hufurahi sana, yeye pamoja na wenzake. Ndiyo maana wenzake humwambia kwamba, ‘umekamata pa kulia.’

Msemo huo hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule aliyepata kazi ya kumletea chakula. Mtu huyo hufurahi sana apatapo kazi hiyo, kwa sababu kazi hiyo humletea chakula. Majirani zake nao pia hufurahi kumuona mwenzao amepata pa kulia. Ndiyo maana watu hao, humwambia hivi, ‘umekamata pa kulia.’

Msemo huo hufundisha watu juu ya kutafuta kazi za kuwaletea chakula, na kufurahi kwa pamoja wazipatapo kazi hizo.

ENGLISH: YOU TRAPPED SOMETHING TO EAT

The source of this saying is a search for food. Such food is available by trapping animals or fishing. When someone finds such food he/she becomes very happy with his/her companions. That is why his/her companions can tell him/her, “you have trapped something to eat.”

The saying is compared to a person who got a new job that will bring him or her food. Such a person becomes very happy when he/she gets such a job. The neighbours of that person also become happy for him/her. That is why those people can say, ‘you have trapped something to eat.’’

The proverb teaches people about finding jobs that can bring them food and make them happy.

312. B’ULONGO B’O MUNA NGOKO AGUGIHYA NOMO

Imbuki ya lusumo lunulo yingilile kungoko iyo yang’waga amagi gayo. Ingoko yiniyo aho yayugang’wa amagi gayo genayo, abhanhu bhagayihaya giki, yalihije unomo goyo, kunguno yandije kuita yabhub’i. Hunagwene abhanhu bhayombaga giki, ‘b’ulongo bho muna ngoko agugihya nomo.’

Ulusumo lunulo lugalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo alinomolomo. Umunhu ng’wunuyo agajaga ulisanya bhanhu bho gubhawila  mihayo ya b’ulomolomo. Giko lulu, umunhu ng’wunuyo agikolaga ni ngoko, kunguno nag’hwe agitaka ya bhubhi ukubhiye. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagang’wilaga giki, ‘b’ulongo bho muna ngoko agugihya nomo.’

Ulusumo lunulo lolanga bhanhu higulya ya kuleka nhungwa ja b’ulomolomo, umuwikaji bhobho, kugiki abhanhu bhenabho bhadule gwikala chiza na bichacho.’

KISWAHILI: UONGO WA KUKU ALICHONGEKA MDOMO

Chanzo cha methali hiyo chatokea kwenye kuku aliyekunywa mayayi yake. Kuku huyo aliyekunywa mayayi yake hayo, watu humsema kwamba, ni kuku aliyechongeka mdomo, kwa sababu ya kutenda matendo maovu. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘uongo wa kuku alichongeka mdomo.’

Methali hiyo hulinganishwa kwa mtu ambaye ni muongo. Mtu huyo huenda akigombanisha watu kwa kuwaambia maneno hayo ya uongo. Hivyo basi, mtu huyo hufanana na kuku aliyekunywa mayayi yake, kwa sababu naye hutenda maovu kwa wenzake. Ndiyo maana watu humwambia mtu huyo kwamba, ‘uongo wa kuku alichongeka mdomo.’

Methali hiyo hufundisha watu juu ya kuachana na tabia za uongo, maishani mwao, ili watu hao, waweze kuishi vizuri na wenzao.

ENGLISH: A CHICKEN’S LIE SHARPENED ITS BEAK

This proverb comes from a chicken that pecked and drunk its eggs. Such a chicken is said to have a pointed beak because of its bad habits of destroying its eggs. That is why people say, “a chicken’s lie sharpened its beak.”

The proverb is used to a person who is a liar. Such a person goes around telling lies that cause conflicts among people. Thus, the person is likened to a chicken that pecked and drunk its eggs because he/she does evil things to others. That is why people tell such people that, “a chicken’ lie sharpened its beak.”

The proverb teaches people to break free from bad habits of lying in their lives so that they can live well with others.

Aho bhiduma bhagiyangula kulekana mhola, kugiki, bhaladule gwiyelela ahashigu ijahabhutongi. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayomba giki, ‘malekana miza gagigenihaga na ha ntondo.’

Ulusumo lunulo lugalenganijiyagwa kubhitoji abho bhiduma na gulekana bhadilumijije. Abhanhu bhenabho bhagigenihaga, kunguno bhalekana chiza. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘malekana miza gagigenihaga na ha ntondo.’

Chanzo cha methali hiyo chatokea kwenye maachano mazuri ya watu wawili waliokosana. Watu hao waliokosana walikuwa wakiishi pamoja wakati wahajakosana. Walipokosana waliamua kuachana salama bila kuumizana, ili waweze kutembeleana kwenye siku za mbeleni. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘maachano mazuri hutembeleana na kesho.’

Methali hiyo hulinganishwa kwa wanandoa waliokosana wakaachana bila kuumizana. Watu hao hutembeleana, kwa sababu waliachana vizuri na salama. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘maachano mazuri hutembeleana na kesho.’

Methali hiyo hufundisha watu juu ya kufikia maelewano mazuri ya kumaliza ugomvi wao, kwa kutumia njia ya amani, ili waweze kuishi salama, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: THOSE WHO PART AMICABLY MAY VISIT ONE ANOTHER IN FUTURE

This proverb emerges from a story of two people who parted amicably due to quarrel. The two people were living together before the quarrel.When they quarreled they decided to part peacefully so that they could visit one another in the future. That is why people say,” those who part amicably may visit each other in future.”

The proverb is compared to couples who quarrel and separate without hurting each other. The couples may visit each other because they parted peacefully. That is why people say, “those who part amicably may visit each other in future.”

The proverb teaches people about resolving conflicts amicably so that they live peacefully in their lives.

310. LUGEMBE MUNDA

Imbuki ya lusumo lunulo ilolile lugembe ulo luli munda ya ng’wa munhu. Ulugembe lunulo luganchembaga umunda munumo. Gashinaga lugaminyaga ung’winikili nda yiniyo. Hunagwene umunhu ng’wunuyo agayombaga giki, ‘lugembe munda.’

Ulusumo lunulo lugalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo opandika mamihayo gagunsunduhaja umumoyo gokwe. Amamihayo genayo gagab’izaga guti lugembe ulolulichembagula umunda yakwe, umunhu ng’wunuyo. Uweyi agadumaga nulu gulya wiguta, kunguno ya gusatya chiniko. Hunagwene umunhu ng’wunuyo agayangaga bhoguyomba giki, ‘lugembe munda.’

Ulusumo lunulo lolanga bhanhu higulya ya kuleka gub’itila mihayo yabhub’i abhichabho, kunguno iyiniyo idulile gubhasunduhaja umuwikaji bhobho.

KISWAHILI: WEMBE TUMBONI

Chanzo cha methali hiyo chaangalia wembe ulioko tumboni mwa mtu. Wembe huo humkata mwenye tumbo hilo. Kumbe huwa unamuumiza sana mtu huyo. Ndiyo maana yeye hulalamika kwa husema kwamba,  ‘wembe tumboni.’

Methali hiyo hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule aliyepata matatizo yaliyomhudhunisha moyoni mwake. Matatizo au maneno hayo, humpatia maumivu kama wembe unaomkatakata tumboni mwake mtu huyo. Maumivu hayo husababisha kwa mtu huyo kushindwa kula mpaka kutosheka. Ndiyo maana mtu huyo huhaangaika akisema hivi, ‘wembe tumboni.’

Methali hiyo hufundisha watu juu ya kuacha kuwatendea maovu wenzao, kwa sababu matendo hayo kuwaumiza wenzao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: A RAZOR IN THE STOMACH

This saying originated from a story of a person with a razor in his stomach. Such a razor cuts the person in the stomach and causes pain to him/her. That is why he/she complains, “a razor in the stomach.”

The saying is likened to a person who went through problems that caused grief to him/her. Such problems, or words, give him/her pains like a razor that cuts his/her stomach. The pains make the person not to eat well. That is why the person in such situation remarks, “a razor in the stomach.”

The proverb teaches people to stop doing bad things to others because bad things hurt others in their lives.
