332. NG’HULU JAWIZA, JIGALAJA MBITI HA NYANGO

Imbuki ya lusumo lunulo yingilile kuli nigini na nina. Unigini ng’wunuyo olatogilwe kulila ahikanza lya b’ujiku. Lushugu lumo, unina agankanga unigini giki, ‘ululamane ulila naguguponya hanze uliwe mbili.’ Ahikanza linilo aliyomba, imbiti nayo yalihoyi aha nyango. Naigwa imihayo yiniyo. Kuyiniyo lulu, imbiti yiniyo yaduka yalindilaga giki iguponegejiwa akana ize ikalye, nose ub’ujiku wela. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki ng’hulu jawiza, jigalaja mbiti hanyango.’

Ulusumo lunulo lugalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo agalindilaga gupandika sabho, nulu jiliwa, bho gwikuga, giki munhu agujigwisha, bho nduhu ugutumama  nimo gose gose. Umunhu ng’wunuyo adulile nulu gucha na nzala, guti ni mbiti yiniyo iyo igelewa b’ujiku, kunguno bhuli ng’wene adatogilwe uguponya sabho jakwe. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘ng’hulu jawiza jigalaga mbiti hanyango.

Ulusumo lunulo lolanga bhanhu higulya ya gutumama milimo ya gubhapandikila sabho, bho nduhu gulindila ja guponyiwa na bhangi, kugiki abhoyi bhajikuge.

KISWAHILI: HABARI NZURI ILIMLAZA FISI MLANGONI

Chanzo cha methali hiyo chatokea kwa mtoto na mama yake. Mtoto huo alipenda kulia wakati wa usiku. Siku moja mama yake alimtisha mtoto huyo, kwa kumwambia hivi, ‘ukiwa unalia nitakutupa nje uliwe na fisi.’ Wakati mama huyo akiongea hivyo, fisi naye alikuwepo mlangoni. Akayasikia maneno hayo. Kwa hiyo, fisi huyo alibaki amesubiri kwamba atatupiwa mtoto aje amle, mwishowe usiku ukapambazuka. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘habari nzuri ilimlaza fisi mlangoni.’

Methali hiyo hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule asubiriye kupata mali au chakula kwa kuokota, kwamba mmoja atadondosha, bila kufanya kazi yoyote. Mtu huyo huweza hata kufa kwa njaa, kama yule fisi aliyepambazukiwa usiku, kwa sababu kila mtu hapendi kutupa mali zake, au kupoteza. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘habari nzuri ilimlaza fisi mlangoni.’

Methali hiyo hufundisha watu juu ya kufanya kazi mbalimbali ziwezazo kuwapatia mahitaji yao yakiwemo yale ya chakula, badala ya kusubiri kuokota au wengine wapoteze, ili wao waweze kuokota.

ENGLISH: GOOD NEWS MADE A HYENA SLEEP AT THE DOOR

The source of this proverb is a child who used to cry at night. One day the mother of the child threatened to hrow out the child to be eaten by hyena. The hyena was around the door when the mother was threatening the child. Hearing the mother’s threat, the hyena hid itself near the door waiting for the meat. It waited the whole night with no success. That is why people say, ‘good news made a hyena sleep at the door.’

The proverb is likened to lazy people, who dream to have possessions or abundant food without struggling for them. They just wait with hope that someone will drop possessions for them to pick. Such people are likely to starve to death.

The proverb teaches people to work hard so as to be self sufficient in different sorts of life, including food and other necessities.

331. LYALAGILWE MPELANU MOKONO.

Imbuki ya kahayile kenako yingilile kukalagilwe ka ng’waka na mpelanu. Ung’waka gunuyo gugab’izaga go nduhu mbula. Ulu mbula gukija utula ng’waka ngima, abhanhu bhagiganikaga giki, Uwelelo uyo ugulaga ung’waka gunuyo oliapelanile. Gashinaga imyaka igab’izaga guti giki igalagagwa na Welelo nayiza. Hunagwene abhanhu ulu ng’waka gub’iza gub’i, uyo mbula gukija gutula, bhagayombaga giki, ‘lyalagilwe mpelanu mokono.’

Akahayile kenako kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo adebhile gutumila nzila ningi ija gwipandikila jiliwa. Umunhu ng’wunuyo agikalaga na jiliwa, nulu ng’waka guga’biza gu’bi, ugo nduhu mbula gutula. Uweyi agalangaga na bhiye bhadizusendamila mbula duhu umilimo yab’o, bho gubhawila giki, ‘lyalagilwe mpelanu mokono.’

Akahayile kenako kalanga bhanhu higulya ya gumana milimo mingi ya gubhapandikila ijiliwa, na guitumama kugiki, bhadizucha na nzala, ahikanza lya nduhu mbula.

KISWAHILI: LIMEAGWA NA MWENYE HASIRA MWAKA HUU

Chanzo cha msemo huo chatokea kwenye kuagwa kwa mwaka na mwenye hasira. Mwaka huo huwa hauna mvua. Mvua ikiacha kunyesha mwaka mzima, yule aliyeuaga hufikiriwa kama ni mwenye hasira. Kumbe miaka huwa na inaagwa na yule aiagizaye kuja. Ndiyo maana mwaka ukiwa mbaya, watu husema kwamba, ‘umeagwa na mwenye hasira mwaka huu.’

Msemo huo hulinganishwa kwa mtu afahamuye kutumia njia mbalimbali za kujipatia chakula. Mtu huyo huwa na chakula cha kutosha, hata kama mwaka ukiwa mbaya ambao hauna mvua. Yeye hufundisha hata wenzake juu ya kutokutegemea mvua pekee, kwa kuwaambia kwamba, ‘umeagwa na mwenye hasira mwaka huu.’

Msemo huo hufundisha watu juu ya kuelewa kazi mbalimbali ziwezazo kuwapatia mahitaji yao, yakiwemo yale ya chakula, na kuzitekeleza ili wasife kwa njaa kwa sababu ya kutegemea mvua pekee, kwenye kazi zao.

ENGLISH: THIS YEAR HAS BEEN ORDERED BY THE ANGRY ONE

This saying comes from the unfortunate year that is believed to be ordered by the angry one. In such a year the rain does not rain throughout the year. When it happens so, people will always say, it is a bad year and therefore labeled as being ordered by the angry one.

The saying can be compared to a person who knows how to cultivate a variety of foods. Such a person is likely to have enough food to eat, even if the year is bad; with no rain. Such a farmer can even teach his/her colleagues about not relying on rain alone by telling them that ‘this year has been ordered by the angry one,’ as a way to encourage others to look for other alternatives of getting food rather than waiting for rain.

Ub’ula bhunub’o b’alyaga b’agikulu iki b’adinamino. Ab’ado yaliyaya ugulya kunguno b’adudila gulwa. Hunagwene abhanakale bhab’awilaga abhadoo giki, ‘udalyage b’ula b’ugwigonzola uwinga.’

Akahayile kenako kagalenganijiyagwa kubhanhu abho bhalina malange gagub’alanga abhanhu bhab’o kugiki bhab’one gub’akuja ab’atale b’ab’o. Abhanhu bhenabho bhagab’utumilaga ub’umani bhob’o bho gubhalekela nhungwa niza ija gudula gwikala na bhanhu chiza. Hunagwene bhagab’awilaga abhanhu bhabho giki, udalyage b’ula b’ugwigonzola uwinga.’

Akahayile kenako kalanga bhanhu higulya ya gub’alanga abhichab’o gwikala nikujo ukubhanhu bhab’o. Akikalile kenako kagubhambilija ijinakubhalanghana chiza abhatale bhabho.

KISWAHILI: USILE UTUMBO HARUSI ITASUASUA

Chanzo cha msemo huo chatokea kwenye ulaji wa utumbo wa mifugo. Zamani ilikuwepo miiko ya watu wa zamani, ya vijana kutokula utumbo. Utumbo huo uliliwa na vikongwe kwa vile hawana meno. Vijana hawakuruhusiwa kula kwa ya kuepuka kuolea mbali. Waliambiwa kwamba, wakila wataolea mbali. Ndiyo maana watu wa zamani waliwaambia vijana kwamba, ‘usile utumbo harusi itasuasua.’

Msemo huo hufananishwa kwa watu ambao wana malezi mema ya kufundisha watu wao namna ya kuwaheshimu wakubwa wao. Watu hao hutumia uelewa wao vizuri katika kuwaachia watoto wao, malezi ya kuwa na tabia njema za kuwawezesha kuishi vizuri na watu. Ndiyo maana watu wao huwaambia hivi, ‘usile utumbo harusi itasuasua.’

Msemo huo hufundisha watu juu ya kuwatunza vizuri watu wao, kwa kuishi nao kwa heshima. Maisha hayo yatawasaidia watu wao katika kuwatunza vizuri wazee wao.

ENGLISH: NEVER EAT OFFALS/ INTESTINE, YOUR MARRIAGE WILL HAVE PROBLEMS

The source of this saying is eating animal offals/intestines. In the past there were taboos forbidding young people from eating offals/intestines. The offals/intestines were eaten by the elderly people who are toothless. The people warned young people against eating offals/intestines by saying, “never eat offals/intestines, your marriage will have problems.”

The saying is similar to people who have good morals for teachimg their young people to respect their elders. These people use their knowledge to teach their people good morals so as to enable them to get along well with other people. That is why they tell their people that, “never eat offals/intestines, your marriage will have problems.”

The saying teaches people how to respect others. This will help children to take good care of older people

329. WINGA B’UDALIAGWA KAB’ILI

Imbuki ya lusumo lunulo yinginile kubhuli bho winga. Ulu winga wikwela mumho na b’amalaga b’adalashokela gwikwela hangi. Ulushugu ulo b’ikwelaga b’agiigwa b’ulya bhumala. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, winga b’udaligwa kab’ili.

Ulusumo lunulo lugalenganijiyagwa kubhanhu abho b’adajidililaga indoa jacho. Abhanhu bhenabho bhagajilekanijiga ikaya jabho guti giki, bhalashokela  hangi ugwikwela. Abhanhu bhenabho bhagakomelejiyagwa gujidilila ikaya jabho, bhaleke ugujilekanija, kunguno bhamala gutola. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘winga b’udaliagwa kab’ili.’

Methali hiyo hulinganishwa kwa watu wale ambao huzitelekeza ndoa zao kwa kutokuzijali familia hizo. Watu hao huwaacha wanafamilia bila msaada, kama kwamba, watarudia kusherekea ndoa tena.

Wale wanaozitunza ndoa zao huwahimiza watu hao wazijali familia zao kwa kuzitunza vizuri, kwa sababu, hawatarudia kufunga ndoa nyingine wakati hii ya sasa bado ipo. Ndiyo maana huwaambia watu hao kwamba, ‘harusi hailiwi mara mbili.’

Methali hiyo hufundisha watu juu ya kuzilinda kwa kuzitunza vizuri familia zao, ili watu wao waendelee kupata mahitaji yao vizuri, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: A WEDDING IS NEVERCELEBRATED TWICE

The source of this saying is wedding celebration. When the wedding is celebrated, it is done, it cannot be repeated. On the day of negotiating the dowry, they conclude everything and celebrate. That is why people say, “a wedding is nevercelebrated twice.”

The saying is compared to people who do not respect their marriage. Such people abandon their families as if they will celebrate the marriage again.

Such people are urged to respect their marriage and take care of their families because they cannot celebrate another wedding as the first marriage still binds them. That is why people tell these people, “a wedding is never celebrated twice.”

The proverb teaches people about respecting their marriage and being responsible for their families so that family members can live happily.

Imbuki ya kahayile kenako yingilile kujisumva ijo jigitanagwa kuli, na bhutale bho ng’wa Welelo. Ikuli yiniyo igikalaga ng’wiwe, aliyo Iweleolo igaisolaga kihamo nugwib’isa goyo, ung’wiwe linilo. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘Welelo nhale yanhya na kuli ng’wiwe.’

Akahayile kenako kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo agiganikaga giki adulile gung’wib’isa Uwelelo, guti kuli iyo igikalaga ng’wiwe. Kuyiniyo lulu, abhanhu bhenabho bhagahayaga giki bhadalacha, kunguno bhadabhumanile ubhutale bho ng’wa Welelo.

Abhanhu abho bhab’udeb’ile ub’utale bho ng’wa Welelo, bhagab’awilaga abhichabho bhenabho, giki, Uweyi adib’isagwa kunguno alintale noyi. Ulu uhaya gunsola munhu oseose, agunsola duhu. Hunagwene abhanhu bhagayombaga giki, ‘Welelo nhale yanhya na kuli ng’wiwe.’

Msemo huo hulinganishwa kwa mtu ambaye hufikiri kwamba aweza kujificha mbele ya Mungu, kama yule mjusi aishiye kwenye jiwe. Kwa hiyo basi, watu hao husema kwamba hawatakufa, kwa sababu ya kutokuufahamu ukuu wa Mungu.

Hali hiyo huwalazimu wale waufahamuo ukuu wa Mungu, kuanza kuwaeleza juu ya ukweli huo. Hakuna awezaye kujificha mbele ya Mungu, kwa sababu ya ukuu wake. Yeye akitaka kumchukua mtu yeyote, humchukua tu. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘Mungu ni mkubwa amemla na mjusi kwenye jiwe.’

Msemo huo hufundisha watu juu ya kutoa malezi mema kwa watu wao juu ya ukuu wa Mungu maishani mwao, na kuamua kuishi kama atakavyo Yeye.

ENGLISH: GOD IS GREAT, HE HAS EVEN TAKEN THE LIZARD’S LIFE

The source of this saying is the greatness of God and the life of lizard. The lizard lives in rocks. But God took its life.That is why people say, “God is great, he has even taken the lizard’s life.”

The saying is compared to a man who thinks that he can hide from the presence of God like the lizard does in rocks. So, these people do not know the greatness of God and they think that they will not die.

The people who know the greatness of God tell those who are ignorant about Him that no one can hide from God because He is great. If He wants to take anybody He will do so. That is why people say, “God is great, he has even taken even the lizard’s life.”

The saying teaches people about acknowledging God’s greatness and deciding to live as God wants them to be.
