Ufunuo 2:10. “Usiogope mateso yatakayokupata. Nakuambia Shetani atawatia baadhi yenu gerezani ili kuwajaribu, nanyi mtapata dhiki kwa muda wa siku kumi. Uwe mwaminifu, hata kufa, nami nitakupa taji ya uzima.”

Luka 9:62. “Yesu akamwambia, “Mtu ye yote atiaye mkono wake kulima, kisha akatazama nyuma, hafai kwa Ufalme wa Mungu.””

ENGLISH: THE GRINDER OF SORGHUM SINGS TO COMFORT HERSELF.

This proverb comes from a woman who was singing while grinding sorghum. This woman was able to console herself through singing until she finishes grinding. That is why people came with the proverb ‘the grinder of sorghum sings to comfort herself’ to describe this situation. Grinding sorghum on the stone is not an easy task; it needs courage and perseverance.

This proverb is used to encourage distressed people or workers to work and be courageous enough in performing some tasks because they will benefit in future. Also this proverb can be used in the context of sickness where the sick person needs to tolerate without despair (Refer to Kugundua Mbegu za Injili, which means, ‘Discovering the Seed of the Gospel,’ page 12). This book was written by the Bujora Cultural Research Committee, edited by researchers: Fr. Donald Sybertz, M.M., and Fr. Joseph Healey M.M., and published by Benedictine Publications, Ndanda – Peramiho, 1993.

This proverb teaches people to work patiently and inspires people to be courageous in their lives. Patience and courage will make people to be responsible in whatever they decide to do in life. “We need to be heartfelt in following Jesus Christ without giving up hope of finding the fruit of our sweat. May we be like the grinding woman who happily presses herself with no worries because of the fruit of her labour.

Fr. Emmanuel Makolo from Shinyanga diocess, Tanzania, wrote the same proverb in his sovernior . That is, he likened the work of a priest to the work of a grinding mother (See Gospel Seed Discoveries, page 13).
