KISWAHILI: USILE UNAIMBA UTAOLEA MBALI

people singing

ENGLISH: NEVER SING WHILE EATING, YOU WILL MARRY FAR AWAY

The source of this saying is a person who eats food while singing. Such a person opens his/her mouth and saliva comes out of his/her mouth. So, as as he/she eats that way, his/her companions do not feel good to see food and saliva from his/her mouth. That is why people say, “never sing while eating, you will marry far away from home.”

The saying is compared to a man who teaches his people good table manners so that they observe them. They know that good upbringing will bring about a moral upright society. People with good manners, if they want to marry, they will be able to get suitors in their neighbourhoods because their good character is known.

But the people who were not brought up properly are never respected by their fellows. When these people want to marry, they have to go far away from their village where their characters are not known. That is why people say, “never sing while eating, you will marry far away from home.”

The saying teaches people about having good character in their lives. These people should also teach their people good manners in order to enable them to live in harmony with others.
