KISWAHILI: WINGI WA MANENO HAUTENGENEZI MJI.

Chanzo cha methali hiyo, chatokea kwenye wingi wa maneno ya watu walioko kwenye familia fulani. Wingi huo wa maneno ni wa kushindwa kusikilizana kwa sababu ya kila mmoja kuendelea kuongea neno lake. Maneno hayo huleta kelele ya kushindwa kuelewana vizuri. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘wingi wa maneno hautengenezi mji.’

Methali hiyo, hulinganishwa kwa watu wale ambao huwa wanazozana kila wakati kwenye familia yao, katika maisha yao. Watu hao, hujitia kujua zaidi kila mmoja kwa kukataa kuwasikiliza wenzake, kwa sababu ya kutaka asikilizwe yeye tu.

Wao hushindwa hata kufanya kazi kwa ushirikiano, kwa sababu ya kujikuta kila mmoja ana kazi yake mwenyewe, ambayo huiona kuwa ni ya maana kuliko zile wanazofanya wenzake. Mwishowe, familia hiyo husambalatika kwa sababu ya kelele hizo za kushindwa kuelewana.

Watu hao, hufanana na wale wenye maneno mengi kwenye familia yao, kwa sababu nao hawa, wana maneno mengi, ambayo husababisha wao kuzozana kwenye familia yao hiyo. Ndiyo maana watu huwaambia kwamba, ‘wingi wa maneno hautengenezi mji.’

Methali hiyo, hufundisha watu juu ya kuwa na uelewano wa kukubaliana kufanya kazi kwa umoja, ili waweze kupata mafanikio ya kutosha kuziendeleza vizuri familia zao, maishani mwao.

ENGLISH: TOO MUCH WORDS DO NOT BUILD A FAMILY.

The source of this proverb is too much words that come from a certain family. When people in a family speak too much it becomes not easy to listern or understand each other. It rather leads to misunderstanding. People can describe this scenario using the proverb that ‘too much words do not build a family.’

This proverb can be compared to those people who are constantly in conflict in their families. Such people tend not to listern to others but to be listerned. They also fail to work together because each one of them will tend underrate the other’s work and consider his/hers to be more important than others. Eventualy, a family of this nature can easily disintegrate because of failing to have common goals. Some of them will appear to be more wordy and force to silence others.

This proverb teaches people about harmony by agreeing to work together. This can enable them to have success in life and take good care of their families.

Mtu anayetafuta mbegu za kukaanga na kula anaweza kulikimbilia haraka sana. Lakini basi, lenyewe pamoja na ukubwa wake huo, halina mbegu ndani yake. Ndiyo maana watu husema kwamba, ‘ukubwa wa mumunya kukosa mbegu.’

Msemo huo, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule ambaye ni mkubwa kwa umbo, lakini hana akili, maishani mwake. Mtu huyo, hujifikiria yeye mwenyewe tu, badala ya kuwafikiria watu wake, kwa sababu ya kukosa akili za kuitunza vizuri familia yake hiyo. ENGLISH: THE BIGGER THE SIZE OF WATERMELON DOES NOT MEAN THE HIGHER THE NUMBER OF ITS SEEDS.

The source of this proverb is the watermelon and its seeds. In its appearance, a watermelon can appear to be very big in size to the extent of confusing someone, who doesn’t know them well, that they have a good number of seeds. To describe this scenario, people can use the proverb that ‘the bigger the size of watermelon does not mean the higher the number of its seeds.’

This proverb can be compared to a person who appears to be matured enough to carry out his/her responsibilities but, unfortunately, he/she is not clever enough to handle those responsilities. This person can spend much of the time thinking about himself/herself with no consideration of others. He/she likely even to fail in taking care of his/her family because of not having good management of resources available. People of this nature can spend much of their time spending the little they have instead of accumulating more for future use. Such people can die without leaving any legacy to their families.

The proverb teaches people about having a mind to protect their families. They have to use the available resources to take good care of themselves and their children.

ENGLISH: THAT’S STUPIDITY OF AN OLD MAN WHICH DOESN’T BUILD A FAMILY

The source of this saying is an old man who appears to be idiot. This makes the old man fail to take control of his family. To describe such an old man, people came with the saying that ‘that’s stupidity of an old man which doesn’t build a family.’

The saying can be compared to a person who wastes his property in his/her life. One can be thinking about himself/herself with no consideration of others who might be, in one way or the other, helpful to him/her in future. If such people get wealth they recklessly spend them, for example, through drinking alcohol and other unplanned uses instead of helping their families. In so doing, they set a bad example to their children thus destroying their future.

The saying teaches people about having the mind to protect their families. People need to use the available resources in order to take good care of their families.

Chanzo cha methali hiyo, chaangalia utoaji wa shukrani wa wasafiri waliopewa miguu. Upewaji huo wa miguu, ni wa watu waliyoko safarini kukaribishwa kwenye mji fulani na kupikiwa chakula. Chakula hicho, huwapa nguvu za kuendelea tena na safari yao kiasi cha kutosha kuwafikisha kule waendako.

Ndiyo maana wasafiri hao huishukuru familia hiyo, na kuiaga kwa kusema kwamba, ‘asante umetupatia miguu. Umetutengenezea viatu.’ Baada ya kusema hivyo, huendelea na safari yao ya kwenda kule waendako.

Methali hiyo, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule mwenye ukarimu wa kuwakaribisha wageni na kuwashukuru wale waliomtendea wema, maishani mwake. Mtu huyo, huishi na watu vizuri kwa kuwatunza wale walioko safarini, ili waweze kupumzika kwake na kuwapatia chakula chakuwaongezea nguvu vizuri. Yeye huwahurumia wale walioko kwenye matatizo mbalimbali, maishani mwao.

Mtu huyo, hufanana na mtunzaji wa wageni anayewapikia chakula, kwa sababu naye huwakaribisha wageni na kuwaandalia chakula nyumbani kwake. Yeye huwafundisha pia wenzake juu ya kuwa na ukarimu wa kuwakaribisha wageni wao, na kuwaandalia chakula.

“Methali hii hutumika kwa watu ambao wanatoa shukrani baada ya kula. Kutupa miguu au kututengenezea viatu ina maana: “Umetupikia chakula ambacho kinatupa nguzu za kusafiri.” Ndiyo maana wageni hao, humshukuru kwa kusema kwamba, ‘asante umepatia miguu. ENGLISH: THANK YOU FOR GIVING US FEET; YOU MADE US SHOES.

The source of this saying is thanksgiving for travelers after being well received by their host and being given food. The food they get is considered as feet to mean more strength that can enable them to continue walking until they reach their set destination. As a way to appreciate their host for the kindness they can use the saying that ‘thank you for giving  us feet; You made us shoes.’

The saying can be likened to a generous person who welcomes strangers and extends thanks to those who have done good in his/her life. The person lives with the people well by taking care of those on the journey. He/she does so by providing them with accommodation and food. People of this nature teaches others about kindness and hospitality to others.

This proverb can be applied to people who express gratitude after eating. Giving us feet or shoes means “You have cooked a meal that gives us strength to continue walking until we reach the planned destination.” This is why visitors can thank someone saying, ‘Thank you for giving us feet; You have made shoes for us’ to show their appreciation. The proverb teaches people to be hospitable to their visitors. They need to provide them with whatever help they can manage. In so doing, they help them gain more strength to continue with their journey.

Human beings have to thank God for the gift of Eucharist.  In the Eucharist we thank God for all the good that He has done for us.

As food gives us the strength to travel to our destination without difficulty, the Eucharist gives us the power to reach God without difficulty. In the sacrament of the Eucharist Jesus Christ has given us feet, made us shoes, that is, He has given us food that enables us to get to Heaven without difficulty. So we should thank our Lord Jesus Christ and say: “Thank you, Father, you have given us feet; you have made us shoes.” Refer to Kueneza Injili kwa Methali page 46.

Akahayile kenako, kagalenganijiyagwa kuli munhu uyo agitaga mihayo ya bhubhi, umukikalile kakwe. Umunhu ng’wunuyo, agabhanyamaga bhanhu obhatula, na gubhataja ijikolo jabho. Uweyi alemile ugutumama imilimo, kunguno ya guwisanya ubhuyami bhokwe bhunubho ubho gubhataja abhanhu bho nguzu isabho jabho.

Umunhu ng’wunuyo, adalendaga aha kaya yakwe, kunguno ya gwikala agucholaga sabho kubhanhu ija gubhataja bho nguzu. KISWAHILI: MUNGU AMEPISHA.

Chanzo cha msemo huo, chatokea kwenye nguvu za Mungu zinazowaepusha watu kwenye matatizo. Nguvu hizo, ni pamoja na zile za kumuondoa duniani mtu anayekwenda kuwanyanhanya watu mali zao. Wale walioepushiwa kufanyiwa uovu huo, husema kwamba, ‘Mungu amepisha.’

Msemo huo, hulinganishwa kwa mtu yule anayefanya matendo maovu yakiwemo yale ya kukaba watu na kuwaibia, katika maisha yake. Mtu huyo, huwakaba watu na kuwanyanhanya mali zao kwa nguvu. Yeye hataki kufanya kazi, kwa sababu ya kutegemea ujambazi huo, wa kuteka na kunyanhanya mali za watu kwa nguvu.

Mtu huyo, hatulii nyumbani kwake, kwa sababu ya kutafuta sehemu za kuteka watu na kuwanyanhanya mali zao wa nguvu. Yeye hufanana na mnyanhanyi yule anayeondolewa duniani na Mungu, ili watu waweze kuepushwa kwenye matatizo. Ndiyo maana watu hao waliopona kuvamiwa, husema kwamba, ‘Mungu amepisha.’

Msemo huo, hufundisha watu juu ya kuacha tabia za kutenda maovu, badala yake wamwamini Mungu anayeweza kuwalinda vizuri, katika maisha yao, ili waweze kuishi kwa amani na wenzao, maishani mwake.

ENGLISH: GOD HAS DONE IT.

The source of this saying is the power of God that keeps people out of trouble. Such power includes the act of removing from the earth the person who is causing trouble to others. People who manage to escape from being affected by such an evil person, when this evil person dies, they can say ‘God has done it.’

The saying can be compared to a person who commits evil things such as armed robbering, and killing people. Such a person does not want to work rather loiters here and there looking for people he/she can rob. When such a person dies, people can easily associate his/her death with the power of God that He has done so in order to rescue others from this wrong doer.

The saying teaches people about giving up evil practices instead, they have to believe in God who can protect them all the time in their lives.
