KISWAHILI: UMEKUTA MTEMI AMEPITA.

Yohane 6:50- 57.

Mathayo 6:11. “Utupe leo chakula chetu tunachohitaji.”

ENGLISH: YOU HAVE FOUND THE CHIEF GONE.

This proverb has its origin from someone who found his fellows had finished eating food. To report to him that they had already eaten food, they told him that “you found the chief gone” meaning that they had finished eating food.

“In the past when the chief walked in for meeting or any business, people around him were to stand up and greet him as a sign of respect. But if the chief reaches a certain place and finds people eating, he was not allowed to stop them from eating. Even if people can stand to greet him he could stop them saying that food keeps peoples’ lives but the chief does not. He (chief) also respects food because it gives him life. Until today, when people are eating they don’t have to speak to each other because they are busy with their chief, food. When they finish eating, they clap hands as a sign of calling the one responsible to collect the vessels used for eating. This is the time one can say ‘the chief has gone’ (Refer to Kueneza Injili kwa Methali which means ‘Spreading the Gospel through Proverbs,’ page 64). This book was written by researchers: Fr. Donald Sybertz, M.M., and Fr. Joseph Healey M.M., published by Benedictine Publications, Ndanda – Peramiho, 1984.

The proverb teaches people to recognize the importance of food by showing respect because that is what gives them life and the power to continue living and doing their jobs.

In a person’s life food is the most important thing. Food is our chief in that it gives us life.

Again the Word of the Lord is the food that gives us the life of God in us, the life of God Himself who is immortal.

The sacrament of the Eucharist is a true and very important food that sustains and enhances the life of God in us. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells in me and I in him” (John 6:56).

When you get to the church you will find your Lord Jesus Christ in the form of bread in the Tabernacle. He does not go away or pass away. Our Catholic faith informs us and assures us that Jesus Christ is indeed in the form of bread in the sacrament of Eucharist. Therefore, we must worship and glorify Him through this sacrament (Refer to ‘Spreading the Gospel in Proverbs,’ page 65).
