8. NYANDA NA KAGIKULU (MIMBI WI WITALE)

Walaliho nyanda. Nyanda ng’wenuyo wajaga kujuhoya na kagikulu. Lushiku lumo uwilwa giki, “Ng’wana wane nakutume uje ha ng’wa Mhimbi itale ukanenhele bhugota, ulu ukanenhela wize nakwinhe ijisabho jane ujitole.

Nyanda ng`wenuyo uzunya uja mpaga ha ng’wa Mhimbi itale aha wegela ubhuja, ng’wa Mhimbi itale hali? Bhuhaya giki, washikaga (nahenaha washikaga ng’wana wane.) na ukansombolela u Mhimbi itale, mayu natumilwe bhugota.

KISWAHILI: MVULANA NA BIBI KIZEE

Alikuwepo mvulana ambaye alienda kuongea na bibi kizee.  Siku moja aliambiwa kwamba, “mtoto wangu nikutume uende kwa mtengeneza jabali ukaniletee dawa, ukiniletea nitakupa kibuyu changu ukioe.

Mvulana huyo alikubali akaenda mpaka kwa mtengeneza jabali alipokaribia aliuliza, “kwa mtengeneza jabali ni wapi?” Wakasema kwamba, “umefika (ni hapa umefika mtoto wangu.) na akamsimulia mtengeneza jabali, “mama nimetumwa dawa.”

Mtengeneza jabali alimwambia “Vibuyu kumi,” ndipo akaanza kuyatoboa. Akatia dawa alipomaliza kuyatia, aliambiwa hivi, “mtoto wangu panda kwenye dari kwa sababu nina watu wanaokuja hapa nyakati za jioni, wakimaliza kula huwa wanalala hapo hapo.” Wakilala wanakituko cha kujamba. Wakianza kujamba shuka basi uchukue ulikate moja mkia wake nalo litakuwa likijamba tu.”

Yalipoanza kujamba, alishuka akaanza safari. Mamtu hayo yalipoamka yalimkosa yakaanza tena kumfuata.

Jua lilipochweya yalimpata kwa mara ya pili. Tena vile vile alipanda mtini na akayatupia tena vibuyu vile vitano yakala dawa kali (ing’hale). Yalipomaliza kula yakaanza tena yalivyozoea kujamba.

Ndipo akashuka na kuanza safari ya kwenda nyumbani. Yalipoamka yalimkosa ndipo basi yakarudi nyumbani kwa mtengeneza jabali. Hivyo mvulana akashinda. Akafika kwa bibi kizee kalikomtuma dawa. Kakamshukuru, asante mtoto wangu. Kaa upumzike, kesho tutaagana. Kulipokucha ndipo alipewa mvulana kibuyu akakioa.

Kilikuwa kizuri mno. Ndipo akaenda nyumbani kwake akafikia kwenye chumba chake, lakini wale wa nyumbani kwake walikuwa hawampendi kwa kukubali kwake kuoa kibuyu, kwa sababu alikuwa ameambiwa hivyo, kwamba, apewe kibuyu na bibi kizee akioe. Katika hali hiyo, walikuwa wakimuona kama mtu wa hasira hasira, wavulana wenzake walikuja kumuangalizia mke wake wakakuta kivuyu, wakazarau.

“Kumbe fulani ana mwanamke mzuri kabisa,” na mama wa mvulana akaenda kumsalimu mkaa mwana wake. Mzee akawa na furaha kubwa mno. “Kumbe mtoto wangu ni mwanaume kweli,” na mzee huyo alifanya sherehe akaita watu wa kijijini hapo akamfurahia mtoto wake.

ENGLISH: A YOUNG MAN AND AN OLD WOMAN

There lived a young man who went talking to an old woman. One day the old woman told him, “My son, go to the carpenter and bring me medicine. If you do it, I will give you my calabash to marry.”wash-2786659__340

The boy agreed and went to the carpenter. When he was almost there, he enquired, “Where is the rock-maker’s place?”

“You have reached (it is right here my son)” The boy explained to the carpenter that he had been sent. “Mom has sent me for medicine.”

The carpenter responded, “Ten calabashes,” and he started piercing holes in each and putting in medicine. When he finished doing so, he told the boy, “My child, take cover in the roof; there are ogres who come to eat and spend nights here. And they normally snore loudly while sleeping. So, when you hear them snore, come down quietly and cut off the tail of one of them.

The boy did as he was told and in the morning, he took the ten calabashes and started his journey home. When the ogres woke up at day break, one of them discovered that his tail was missing. So they all set off to hunt down the boy, singing: “Laugh, mother’s child, laugh. You have stolen our medicine at the carpenter’s, laugh, and laugh.”

At last they found him. The boy climbed a fig tree for safety, but the monsters surrounded it and waited for him to descend. Instead, the boy started to throw down the calabashes one by one and the giants started eating the contents (potent medicine). After consuming the medicine, the monsters fell deeply asleep and started snoring again. The boy came down the tree and took off again. When they woke up, the furious ogres found the boy gone. They began to track him again.

At sunrise, they found him once more. He climbed a fig tree again and threw them the calabashes containing the powerful medicine. When they finished ingesting the drugs, they started snoring off again as was their norm.

The boy climbed down and resumed his journey home. When the giants woke up, they were so annoyed that they set off to return to the carpenter’s. So the boy emerged the victor. He proceeded to the old lady who had sent him for the medicine. The woman thanked him profusely for making it back home. “Thank you, thank you my baby. Relax. Tomorrow we will part.” The next day, he was offered a little calabash to marry, as earlier promised by the old lady.

And it was a very lovely one. But when he went to his home, his people were not impressed by the fact that he had accepted to marry the old woman’s calabash. In fact, whenever they came visiting, they could tell that he was an unhappy man. When his friends paid him a visit and found that he had a calabash in place of a wife, they despised him.

But the young man knew that inside the calabash, there was a real woman. She used to come out of the calabash at night. One day he told his wife, “I am ashamed; I think I should burn this calabash so that they can see you when they come.”

His wife refused, saying, “It is my clothing.” But the man waited till she was asleep, stealthily took up the calabash and burned it. He then went out with all his clothes.

When she woke up and failed to get her calabash, she wrapped herself in her clothes. The man went to his sisters and told them to come and greet their sister in law. When they came, they found a very beautiful woman. And after greeting her, they went to share their wonderful experience with their parents.

 “Behold, the young man has a very beautiful wife,” the young man’s mother said after going to greet her son’s wife. On his part, the boy’s father was so excited and happy that he organized a feast in the village to celebrate him. “My son is a real man,” he said.

7. KALAGU YA NKULUYE OLUNG’WANDO

Nkuluye lung’wando akalinha mulinti aliyo ilisala lyakwe lyashilaga kung`olekeja umo aliganikila unkuluye mbiti. Akiganika gete apandike nzila ya kupilila. Huna lulu agalinha mlinti lya majibabayu. wandya ugugatona. Ugwandya ogaponejaga haho hasi gatobhagukaga gete, uhaya nkuluye ombiti, nalibhona ulu nalamane nugaponeja hanaha gagucha gete, hambu hambu nagaponeje kakule hado aho galiho maswa gagugwa chiza no. Huna lulu akakaponeja ka kule hado na nkuluye ombiti akakakubhija ahipande uko gagwilaga. Nkuluye lung’wando akika wangu wangu kulwande lya kabhili lya linti akaja kabala hadololo. Huna lulu nkuluye mbiti akiganika hangi gugab`ab`a untwe na kwiganika.

Hanuma uyomba ulu atujibadija imbuki yaho. Nkuluye lung’wando uyomba, nzugu nkuluye mbiti, nikubhijage na nuguwila duhu imbuki yaho.

Aliyo ijigano jeniji jihayile munhu ang`we bhuki bhudoo tame, apandike isala lya kujibadija. Unene namanile uko bhuli ubhuki ubhusoga.

Huna lulu nkuluye mbiti adubhuhayaga ubhuki wenubo aliyo alihaya anfumbulile imihayo yeniyo.

Agankubhija kushika mpaga ushika hipande Iya mhembo ningi ja bhuki.

Nkuluye lung’wando akahodisha bhuli mhembo nose uyibhona imo yinabhuki wingi gete, ung’witana nkuluye mbiti ung’wila, “Nzugu ikuluye, unene nakugugonda hadoo upandike kutula ntwe gwako na kulamba ubhuki ahobhulizwila”. Huna lulu ugugundyamya, nu nkuluye mbiti akegeleja ntwe, nkuluye olung’wando akagwinamika gete mpaga gwikila hantwe go nkuluye mbiti. Nang’hwe uduma ukufunya hangi imhembo yulemela kuntwe. Aho Wabhona giki untwe golemela mo, nkuluye mbiti wandya kwidamukadamuka.

Ulila akakoyakoya, akalomba, akikumbilija huna lulu aho obhona oding`wa gete, nkuluye lung’wando akinga agusekasekaga gete. Akafata nzila yakwe ya kuja kaya.

Imo nzila bhutung’wana nuse o mbiti bhakigisha, use ombiti ubhuja, bhebhe nkuluye lung’wando, omonaga ung’wizukulu wane ung’wipolu‘? Nkuluye lung’wando ushosha, ng’hana aliho kwenuko, digushagano nang’hwe na bhuyegi bhutale, niyo diganilaga na majigano, ni haha ung’wizukulu oko aliho uko numa aligema ugujishosha ijigano. Hamo ubhebhe bhabha ukudula ukushifumbula, namhala ombiti ushosha, nahene jiganage. Nu nkuluye olung’wando ugana;

Noni nhale ikimbaga,

Noni ndoo ikimbaga,

Nzuki inhale ikasumaga,

Nzuki indoo ikalumaga,

Munhu ndoo akahadikaga,

Nahene nduhu mhayo, igelelile bhugota ki.

Namhala wa mbiti akanunhya itumbati hadoo, akiganika aliyo atajidebhile imbuki ya jigano ulung’wando nose wandya kuseka na kwimba.

Ipembo lya nzuki,

Likenhaga bhudaki,

Hayile bhugota,

Ukuntwe ya ipundu.

Ise ombiti akiganika kushisha akandya kushimana imbuki ya shigano akadahya unkuluye lung`wando, udima nzila ya kuja ng`wipolu kujunchobha ung’wizukulu okwe.

Niyo hangi waliati na nguno ya kukobha gete kulwa yombo nhale iyo akiyita unkuluye ombiti. Nose umona unamhala ombiti, akiganika hamo ung’wizukulu wane odimagwa alibha mabhuki ga mamunhu.

Agasola ilanha agantule gete, na lushiku Iwenulo bhakigwa bhanhu bhingi giki unkuluye mbiti odimagwa alibha mabhuki ga bhanhu, aganilwa no.

KISWAHILI: KITENDAWILI CHA KAKA YAKE NA SUNGURA

Kulikuwa na wakati fulani kaka yake na Sungura alimdanganya kaka yake fisi mpaka kufikia kwa fisi kuchoka. Alifikiri kama kwamba atayamaliza maneno hayo. Ndipo alifikiri kweli, mpaka akapata akili. Alimkuta kaka yake na Sungura akakubali kwenda kutembea kidogo pamoja naye.

Kaka yake na Sungura alikubali, akaondoka wakafuata njia ya kwenda mashambani. Walipokaribia kaka yake na fisi alisema, kama anafahamu yalipo mapapai mazuri kabisa. Kaka yake na Sungura alikubali kwenda huko.

Walipofika kaka yake na fisi alimwambia kaka yake na Sungura, apande kwenye mti wa mapapai achume mapapai, alifikiri, kwamba akipanda wakati wa kushuka alifahamu kuwa angeshuka hovyo hovyo. “Wakati huo nitamshika na kumla.”

Kaka yake na Sungura alipanda kwenye mti lakini wakati huo akili yake ikawa imemuonesha wazi anavyofikiri kaka yake na fisi. Alifikiri kweli namna ya kupata njia ya kuponea.

Ndipo basi alipanda mti wa mapapai. Akaanza kuyachuma. Mwanzoni alikuwa akiyatupia pale chini yanapasuka na kusambaa kabisa, akasema kaka yake na fisi, “naona nikiendelea kuyatupia hapo yatapasuka kabisa, afadhali niyatupie kwa mbali kidogo kwenye majani yataanguka vizuri mno.”

Ndipo basi akaanza kuyatupia kwa mbali kidogo na kaka yake na fisi akayafuata kule yalikoangukia. Kaka yake na Sungura alishuka haraka haraka kwa upande wa pili wa mti akaenda sehemu kidogo.

Ndipo akapata nafasi ya kuongea, kaka yake na fisi, “ninakumbuka hadithi nzuri kabisa.” Kaka yake na fisi akasema, “sawa nihadithie.” Kaka yake na Sungura akasema,

Ndege mkubwa huimba

Ndege mdogo huimba

Nyuki mkubwa huuma

Nyuki mdogo huuma

Mtu mdogo huamua

Lakini hakuna neno

Hutosha dawa gani

Tundu kichwani?

Ndipo basi kaka yake na fisi alifikiri hadi kichwa kikawasha kwa sababu ya kufikiri. Mwishowe alisema kwamba kama hataipatia maana yake atakuwa ameshindwa. Kaka yake na Sungura alisema, “njoo kaka yake na fisi, nifuate nitakueleza chanzo chake.

Lakini hadithi hii hutaka mtu anywe asali kidogo kwanza, apate akili ya kuipatia. Mimi najua iliko asali iliyo nzuri.

Ndipo basi kaka yake na fisi akawa haitaki hiyo asali lakini anataka amfahamishe maana ya maneno hayo. Alimfuata mpaka kufika kwenye sehemu yenye mapango mengi ya asali.

Kaka yake na Sungura alibisha hodi kwenye kila pango, mwishowe aliliona pango lenye asali nyingi kabisa. Alimwita kaka yake na fisi akamwambia, “Njoo kaka yake, mimi nitakukunja kidogo upate kuweka kichwa chako kwenye sehemu ya kukuwezesha kulamba asali inapotokea.”

Ndipo basi akainamisha kichwa, na kaka yake na fisi akasogeza kichwa, kaka yake na Sungura aliinamisha kabisa kichwa mpaka kikatelemkia kwenye kichwa cha kaka yake na Fisi. Naye akashindwa kutoa tena pango likakatalia kwenye kichwa. Alipoona kwamba, kichwa kimekatalia humo, kaka yake na fisi alianza kuruka kuruka.

Alilia akahangaika, akiomba, na kubembeleza ndipo basi alipoona kwamba ameshikwa kabisa, kaka yake na Sungura aliondoka akicheka cheka kabisa. Akafuata njia yake ya kurudi nyumbani.

Mle njiani walikutana na baba yake na fisi wakasalimiana, baba yake na fisi aliuliza, “wewe kaka yake na Sungura, umemuona mjukuu wangu porini?”

Kaka yake na Sungura alijibu, “kweli yupo huko, tumecheza mno naye tukiwa na furaha kubwa, tena tumehadithiana na hadithi, na sasa mjukuu wako yuko kule nyuma akijaribu kuijibu hadithi. Labla wewe baba utaweza kuifumbua.” Mzee wa fisi aliribu, sawa nihadithie. Na kaka yake na Sungura alihadithia:

Ndege mkubwa huimba

Ndege mdogo huimba

Nyuki mkubwa huuma

Nyuki mdogo huuma

Mtu mdogo huamua

Lakini hakuna neno

Hutosha dawa gani

Tundu kichwani?

Mzee wa fisi alinusa tumbaku kidogo, alifikiri lakini hakuifahamu maana ya hadithi. Mwishowe Sungura alianza kucheka na kuimba.

Pango la nyuki,

Huleta hasira,

Hutaka dawa,

Kichwani mwa tundu.

Baba yake na fisi, alifikiri mpaka kufikia akaanza kukifahamu chanzo cha hadithi hiyo. Aliaga, kaka yake na Sungura, alishika njia ya kurudi porini kumtafuta mjukuu wake.

Tena hakuwa na sababu ya kutafuta kabisa kwa sababu kelele kubwa ilisikika aliyoifahanya kaka yake na fisi. Mwishowe alimuona mzee wa fisi, alifikiri labla mjukuu wake ameshikwa akiwa anaiba asali za watu.

Alichukua fimbo kubwa kabisa, na siku hiyo walisikia watu wengi kwamba kaka yake na fisi ameshikwa akiibwa asali ya watu, alizomewa mno.

ENGLISH: THE STORY OF HARE AND HYENA

Hare and Hyena were friends. One day Hyena asked his friend Hare out for a walk. Hare agreed and they left for the fields. Hyena told his friend Hare that he knew of a place where very nice pawpaws grew. When they got there, Hyena told Hare to climb the pawpaw tree and pick the fruits. Hyena knew that Hare would fall as he tried to descend from the tree, and in the process he would eat the poor fellow. Hyena told himself, “At that time I will grab him and eat him.”white-2561331__340

Hare agreed to climb the tree but he was clever enough to tell what was in Hyena’s mind. So he came up with an escape plan.

He told Hyena that since the pawpaws were getting damaged as he threw them to ground after plucking them, it would be better if he threw the fruits a little distance away in the grass to avoid the damage.hyena-3557778_960_720

Hyena agreed, so Hare started throwing the pawpaws a little farther away from the tree. Hyena was therefore forced to move some distance away from the tree to collect the dropping fruits. At that point Hare took advantage of Hyena’s absence at the base of the tree and rapidly descended safely.

Once Hare got a chance to talk, he told Hyena, “I have remembered a beautiful story.”

“Please tell me,” Hyena said.

So Hare said:

Big bird sings

Small bird sings

Big bees bite

Small bees bite

A young person decides

But there is no word

What medicine is enough

A hole in the head?

Hyena thought so hard about the answer to the riddle that his head became hot. Finally he said that if he did not give the meaning he would concede defeat. So Hare said, “Come my brother Hyena, follow me; I will tell you the source of the story. But it requires a person to drink a little honey to sharpen the mind to tell it. And I know where there is good honey.”

Hyena did not want the honey; he was simply interested in knowing the meaning of those words. He followed his friend Hare up to a place where there was a lot of honey.

Hare knocked on each cave, and finally saw one that was very rich with honey. He called Hyena and said, “Come on my brother, I will bend you a little bit to let your head into the cave to enable you access the honey.”

Hare bowed his head and eased it in and out of the cave. Hyena followed the motions of his friend, but unfortunately for him, his head got stuck into the cave. He got agitated and started jumping up and down.

Hyena cried out and begged when he discovered that he had been completely trapped. His friend Hare went away laughing, as he followed his way back home.

On the way, he met Hyena’s father and they greeted each other. Hyena’s father asked, “Hare, have you seen my son in the forest.”

Hare replied, “It’s true he is there, we were playing happily together and we were overjoyed, and right now your son is still there trying to find an answer to a story. Maybe you as his dad can unravel it.”

And Hare went on to say:

Great bird sings

Small bird sings

Big bees bite

Small bees bite

A young person decides

But there is no word

What medicine is enough

A hole in the head?

Hyena’s old man sniffed a pinch of tobacco, thought for a while, but could not crack the meaning of the puzzle. Hare began laughing and singing:

Bee cave,

Brings anger,

You need medicine,

At the hole in the head.

After much thought, Hyena’s father got to a point of understanding the meaning of the story. He bid Hare goodbye and left for the forest to find his son.

He did not look for long because soon a loud noise that was produced by the Hyena was heard. Finally when the old Hyena found his son, he thought that he had been arrested for stealing honey.

He caned him hard, and from that day many people learnt that Hyena was caught stealing their honey. He was really ridiculed by the people.

 

6. KISONOKO

Nkima wa nsabhi umo akading’wa bhusatu, aho wabhona giki atupila bhusatu wenubho, akang’witana ng’wana wakwe nkima uyo wali umo duhu. Akantuula ha lwande lo bhulili ubho wali alalile unekela kayombele. Shiku jose nalikulomba ubhize nkima ntengeke, nane nakukulola nakugulanghana. Huna bhabha wabho akaja kuboma, aho washika kwenuko, akangulila ng’wana wa kwandya myenda misoga. Uwakabhili lulu na lunasi. Na aha akabhiza alibhita ng’wilago hi kanza lya kushoka, katambi kamo ka mbalazi kakantula ha ngofila yakwe, ngofila yugwa. Akatambi kene kugwa aganchalila ng’waniki wakwe. Ng’wana akagasola akatambi, ukakahamba higulya ya jigila jang’wa nina. Akalila noyi ho, nose akatambi kupandika minzi ga jisoji jakwe. Huna kubhiza nti nsoga, bhuli lushiku akayuja ng’hangala idatu ahenaho aha nti kulila.

Hanuma jigazenga noni aha nti gwenuyo, ikabhiza ukuyomba na ng’wenuyo ung’wana akanang’hana shiku jose. Na kung’wenhela pye iji alijitogwa.

Ntemi wasi yeniyo wali na ng`wana ngosha watogagwa kutola. Kushika nose akita jigukulu na kubhabhilinga bhanhu bhose bhize hajigukulu. Kulwa giki ng’wana wakwe ize akomanye ng’wiye uyo aling’haya. Na bhoyi abhaniki bhabili bhali bhabhilingwa nabho, aho bhalihayauguja bhagang’witana uKisonoko bhung’wila bhebhe Jisonoko tusagulage nzwili jise, jibhegelejage ijilatu jise, dutungilage funga maziwa jise (shindilia), tudule kuja kujubhina hajigukulu ja ntemi.

Jisonoko akabheja kiti umo wawililagwa, aho wamala kwita yeniyo atiyumiligije akalila no kunguno nu wei watogagwa kuja. Na ng’halikijo akanomba nina anzunilije aje. Nina akayomba, bhebhe Kisonoko, bhebhe utina myenda ya kuzwala na hangi utamanile nulu hadoo ukubhina nang’ho ulitogwa kuja kumbina? Kisonoko wamanulomba, nina ung’wila, “Ulu ulitogwa kuja na hene nakwita nzugo gumo gwa bhunyenya na kukusanja sanja na mabhu, ulu udula kusolela bhunyenya wenubho kwikanza lya saa ibhili, ukuja kumbina haho na haho. Huna wita nzugo gwa bhunyenya mgati ya mabhu umayu ng’wenuyo.

Haho ung’wana akapela hanze bho nyango gwa numa ng’wilago ukalila.

Aha wamala kuyomba yeniyo winga na bhana bhakwe bhabili uja kujigukulu. Aho bhikala bhamalaga kuja pye na atasangile munhu ha kaya, Kisonoko akaja kulwa bhusunduhazu hasi ya mbalazi, akalila;

“Ibhigisage ibhigisage mbalazi,

unibhegeleje wa dhahabu, na hela na jizwalo”.

Unwani wakwe noni akalala mnti ung’wenhela jizwalo ja langi ya dhahabu na hela na jilatu jiza gete ja (halili) uzwala ubhalondeja bhaniki bhiye kujigukulu ikala bhadambadijije igiki na weyi Kisonoko, bhahayaga nkima ungi. Nguno wamanyikaga nsoga no kumyenda yakwe ya sabho.

Munhya wa ng’hana alikaya wanekaga.

KISWAHILI: KISONOKO

Mwanamke mmoja alishikwa na ugonjwa. Alipoona kwamba hatapona ugonjwa alimwita mtoto wake wa kike aliyekuwa mmoja tu. Alimweka pembeni mwa kitanda alichokuwa amelalia akamwamuachia neno, akisema, “Naomba siku zote uwe mwanamke mwema, mimi nitakuangalia na kukulinda.”guy-2590825__340

Alipomaliza kusema maneno hayo, alifunika macho yake, akafa. Alizikwa ndani ya bustani. Mtoto huyo alikuwa akienda kila siku kwenye bustani hiyo kwa mama yake na kulia mno siku zote. Mtoto huyo aliyasikia maneno ya mama yake akawa mwema kwa watu wote.

Baba yake alimuoa mwanamke mwingine. Mwanamke huyo mpya alikuwa na watoto wa kike wawili. Naye aliwachukua nyumbani mwake, walikuwa na sura nzuri, lakini mioyoni mwao walikuwa wabaya.

Yule mtoto mtesekaji ulipofika wakati wa kilio alienda kulia kwa mama yake. Walipomuona tu walisema, “Kadudu haka nako kanataka nini kwenye Baraza hili.”

Wakitaka kula mkate walianza kumtesa kwanza, “ondoeni kwanza chakula cha kwenye jiko.” Ndipo walimvua nguo zake zilizo nzuri walimvisha linguo lililochanika chanika la kijivu.

 Walimcheka mno, walikuwa wanamuangalizia kwenye jiko huku wakimlazimisha kufanya kazi nzito sana. Mwishowe alianza kuamuka asubuhi wakati kukiwa bado giza jua likiwa bado halijachomoza. Alipoamka alichota maji, aliwasha moto, alipika na kufua.

Juu ya hayo, wale wasichana wawili walianza kumchokoza na kumtesa kwa kila namna huku wakimcheka. Wakati jua linapochwea naye alikuwa amechoka. Hakuwa na kitanda cha kulalia. Tena alikuwa akilala jikoni kwenye majivu siku zote. Alikuwa amechafuka vumbi na uchafu mwilini. Pia walimwita Kisonoko.

Siku moja baba yake alitaka kwenda mjini. Akawauliza watoto wake, juu ya kitu ambacho walitaka akawaletee. Mtoto wa kwanza alisema, “mimi nataka nguo nzuri kabisa.”

Mtoto wa pili alisema, “ukaniletee lulu na alimasi.” Basi, baba akamuuliza na mtoto wake mwingine, “na wewe unapenda nini”? Mtoto alijibu, “mpendwa baba, mimi nataka unikatie tawi la kwanza litakalopiga juu ya kofia yako wakati ukiwa unarudi.”

Ndipo baba yao alienda mjini. Alipofika huko, alimnunulia mtoto wa kwanza nguo nzuri. Mtoto wa pili alimnunulie lulu na alimasi. Pia alipokuwa akirudi nyumbani alipita bustanini, tawi moja la mbaazi lilimpiga kwenye kofia, ikaanguka. Katawi hako kalikoanguka alikachukua na kumpelekea msichana wake.

Mtoto huyo alikachukua kale katawi na kwenda kukapanda kwenye kaburi la mama yake. Alilia sana huko, mwishowe kale katawi kalipata maji ya machozi yake. Ndipo kakawa mti mzuri, kila siku akawa akienda mara tatu hapo kwenye mti huo kulia.

Hapo ndege walijenga kwenye mti huo, ikawa kule kusema naye mtoto alimlinda siku zote. Pia mama yule alimletea yote aliyoyapenda.

Mfalme wa nchi hiyo, alikuwa na mtoto mwanamume aliyetaka kuoa. Mpaka kufikia mwishowe alifanya sikukuu na kuwakusanya watu wote kwenye sikukuu hiyo. Lengo la sikukuu hiyo lilikuwa ni kwa ajili ya kumwezesha mtoto wake kuja kuchagua mwenzake aliyemtaka.  Pia wale wasichana wawili walikuwa wamealikwa nao. Walipotaka kwenda walimwita Kisonoko wakamwambia, “wewe kisonoko tuchane nyele zetu, uvitengeneze viatu vyetu, tufungie sindilia zetu, tuweze kwenda kucheza kwenye sikukuu ya Mfalme.”

Kisonoko alifanya kama walivyomueleza. Alipomaliza kufanya hivyo, hakuvumilia alilia mno kwa vile naye alikuwa anapenda kwenda. Mwishowe alimuomba mama yake amruhusu kwenda.

Mama yake alisema, “wewe Kisonoko, wewe huna nguo za kuvaa unataka kwenda, tena hujui kucheza hata kidogo nawe unataka kuja kwenye ngoma?”

Kisonoko alikuwa akiomba, mama yake alimwambia, “Kama unapenda kwenda, basi, nitamwaga mfuko mmoja wa ufuta na kuuchanganya na majivu, kama utaweza kuchambua ufuta huo kwa muda wa saa mbili, utaenda kwenye ngoma hapo hapo. Ndipo akamwaga mfuko wa ufuta ndani ya majivu mama yule.

Hapo mtoto alikimbia nje kwa mlango wa nyuma kwenye bustani akalia huko.

“Haraka haraka njoni mlioko hemani mnisaidie mtoto mtesekaji, Ndege weusi, na wa blue haraka haraka wahini muje, mmoja au wote kwa kusaidia njoni haraka haraka okoteni okoteni.”

Ndipo hapo wakaanza kuja ndege waupe wawili wakatua juu ya dirisha la nyumba ya kupikia. Nyuma yake wakaja tena ndege wawili. Baada ya hao, wakaja ndege wadogo wadogo ambao walikuwa wakiishi kwenye hema. Wakalia na kupiga piga mabawa yao. Wakadondoka chini kwenye majivu wakaanza kufanya kazi.

Waliokota ufuta wakaweka ndani ya bakuli na kubakisha maivu tu. Kazi yote hiyo ilifanywa kwa saa moja tu, na wale ndege wakaruka kwenye dirisha.

Mtoto alilipeleka lile bakuli kwa mama yake kwa furaha kwamba ataenda ngomani. Lakini mama yake alisema, “hapana, wewe kisonoko. Huna nguo za kuvaa na huwezi kucheza usiende.”

Kisonoko aliongeza kuomba sana, mama yake alisema, “sasa ukiweza kuokota mizigo miwili ya ufuta kwa muda wa saa moja utaenda.” Akafikiri kwamba ataweza kumchosha Kisonoko, alichukua mifuko miwili ya ufuta akaichanganya na majivu akaimwaga.

Naye mtoto alikimbia mbio nje kwenye bustani hiyo ilikuwa nyuma ya nyumba. Akalia kama kwanza;

“Haraka haraka nyie wa kwenye hema, mnisaidie mtoto mtesekaji. Ndege wekundu, na wa blue, haraka haraka wahini muje, mmoja au wote kwa kusaidia njoni, haraka haraka okoteni okoteni.”

Ndipo wakaja wengi kupita wale wa mwanzo. Waliokota ufuta ote wakatia kwenye bakuli, wakaacha majivu tu. Kazi hiyo ilifanywa kwa muda mfupi. Kisonoko akaenda kulichukua lile bakuli na kulipeleka kwa mama yake kwa furaha iliyopilitiza.

Akafikiri kwamba kwa sasa hakuna matatizo ataweza kwenda. Lakini mama yake alimwambia, “yote hayo ni ujinga tu, hutaweza kwenda tena huna nguo huwezi na kucheza, utatutia aibu tu.”

Alipomaliza kusema hivyo, aliondoka na watoto wake kwenda kwenye sikukuu. Waliondoka wote naye hakukuta mtu pale nyumbani, kisonoko alienda kwa huzuni kwenye mti wa mbaazi, akalia;

“Jisokote jisokote mbaazi, unitengenezee wa dhahabu, hela za mavazi.”

Rafiki yake ndege aliruka mtini akamletea mavazi ya rangi ya dhahabu na hela na viatu vizuri kweli vya (halili) akavaa akawafuata wasichana wenzake kwenye sikukuu lakini hawakumgundua kuwa, ni yeye Kisonoko. Walikuwa wakidhani mwanamke mwingine, kwa sababu alijulikana kuwa mzuri mno kwa nguo zake za mali ua gharama zaidi.african-woman-1580545__340

Mwanamume hapo alimwendea akamshika mkono, alicheza naye na hakucheza na mtu mwingine yeyote. Pia hakuuachia kabisa mkono wake, kama kwamba alitaka kucheza na watu wengine, mwanamume huyo alisema, “mama huyu anacheza na mimi tu.”

Ndipo basi walicheza wakati wa mwisho usiku. Kisonoko alitaka kurudi nyumbani, mwanamume akamwambia, “Nitakusindikiza mpaka nyumbani.”  Lengo lake alitaka kwenda kufahamu sehemu ile anayokaa mtoto huyo mzuri.

Wakati wa kwenda Kisonoko alitokoroka haraka haraka kwenye mikono ya yule mwanamume akakimbia kwao. Mwanamume alimfuata, lakini Kisonoko aliruka akaingia kwenye tundu kubwa la njiwa akafunga mlango.

Mwanamume huyo alisimama hapo mpaka baba yake alipita kwenda kwake, akamwambia, “mama huyo aliyejulikana yule aliyekuwa kwenye sikukuu amejificha humu kwenye shimo la njiwa.”

Ndipo wakaja hawakuona hata kitu. Walipoingia ndani ya nyumba ndipo walimuona Kisonoko amelala kwenye majivu kama alivyokuwa siku zote na taa ikiwa imewaka.

Kwa haraka aliingia mbio kwenye tundu la njiwa akawahi kufika kwenye mbaazi akavua nguo zake zilizo nzuri akaziweka chini ya mbaazi ili ndege wapate kuzichukua, akarudi haraka haraka. Akajiweka kwenye majivu kama kawaida yake.

Siku ya pili iliaandaliwa sikukuu, mama yake na baba yake na wakubwa zake walipoenda. Kisonomo alienda tena kwenye mbaazi akasema, “Jisokote jisokote mbaazi, unitengenezee wa dhahabu, hela za mavazi.”

Ndege akamletea nguo nzuri za juu kupita mwanzoni (ya mpango wa zamani). Alipofika kwenye ngoma, kila mmoja alisimama na alishangaa mno vile alivyo kwa uzuri wake na mwanamume yule aliyemsubiri, alimshika mkono wakacheza.

Kila mmoja aliyetaka kucheza naye, mwanamume yule alisema, “mama huyu anacheza na mimi.” Usiku ulipoingia zaidi, Kisonoko alitaka kwenda kama kawaida yake, na mwanamume alimfuata kama hapo mwanzo.  Lengo lake likiwa ni kutaka kufahamu nyumba anayoingia.

Lakini aliruka, akakimbia akajificha bustanini nyuma ya nyumba ya baba yake. Ndani yake bustani hiyo, kulikuwa na mchungwa ambao ulikuwa umezaa machungwa mabichi mengi.

Kwa vile Kisonoko hakujua sehemu ya kujificha. Aliruka kwenye mchungwa bila kujitokeza. Mwanamume alisemama hapo mpaka baba yake akarudi kwenda nyumbani kwake.

Alimwambia, “mama yule ambaye alijulikana aliyekuwa akicheza nami amepenyeza hapa.” Baba yake alifikiri “asije akawa Kisonoko?” Aliamua kuleta shoka mti ukatwe, lakini hakuona chochote. Walipoenda jikoni walimkuta Kisonoko amelala kama ilivyo kawaida yake, alihawi kufika kwenye mti akavua nguo zilizo nzuri akavaa manguo yake yaliyochanika chanika.

Siku ya tatu walipoenda baba yake, na mama yake pia wakubwa zake, alienda tena kwenye mbaazi akalia; “Jisokote jisokote mbaazi, unitengenezee wa dhahabu, hela za mavazi.” Ndege akamletea nguo nzuri za juu kupita zile za siku zile mbili. Akamletea viatu vya dhahabu vyote. Alipofika ngomani kila mmoja akawa hana la kusema kwenye uzuri wake.

Alicheza na mwanamume huyo, pale mwishoni alitaka kwenda kama kawaida yake ya kwenda, na mwanamume alimfuata akisema moyoni, “sasa ndipo nitaangalia asinitoroke kabisa.” Kisonoko alienda mbio kabisa mwishowe kiatu chake kimoja cha mguu wa kushoto kilivulika kwenye mpando.

 Mwanamume akakiokota, na siku ya pili alienda nacho kwa baba yake akamwambia, “Nataka kumuona yule atakayefanana na kiatu iki.”  Wasichana wale wawili waliposikia habari hizo, walifurahi mno, kwa sababu miguu yao ilikuwa mizuri, na midogo na walifikiri hivi, hakuna neno wataweza kukivaa kiatu hicho.

Ndipo yule wa kwanza aliingia ndani ya chumba mule kilimokuwa kile kiatu akakijaribisha. Wakati huo, mama yake alikuwa amesimama karibu yake, lakini vidole vyake havikuwa sawa.

Hivyo kiatu kikawa kidogo kabisa kwake, mama yake alimpa kisu akasema, “hakuna neno jikate, ukiwa mke wa ikulu hutaangaliwa kwenye kidole kikubwa kwa sababu hutaenda kwa miguu.

Ndipo mjinga huyo alikikata kidole chake kikubwa. Alishindilia kiatu akamdanganya mwanamume. Mwanamume akampandisha mpenzi wake juu ya farasi, akapanda wakaenda kidogo.  Walipokuwa wakienda walipita karibu na pale ulipokuwa ule mbaasi ule ambao Kisonoko aliupanda. Juu yake alikuwepo ndege amekaa juu yake akiimba;

“Rudi tena, rudi tena, damu imejaa kwenye kiatu ni kidogo kabisa tena hakilingani, mwanamume mwanamume muangalie mpenzi wako kwanza, mpenzi wa kweli yuko nyumbani umemuacha.”

ENGLISH: KISONOKO

Once upon a time, there lived a sick woman. When she realized that she would not get well from her sickness, she called her only daughter, asked her to sit on the side of the bed, and said the following words: “Please always be a good woman, I will watch over you and protect you.”african-2399046__340

When she had finished speaking, she closed her eyes and died. She was buried in the garden. Every time, the daughter would take a walk in the garden to visit her mother’s grave, crying. And whenever she heard her mother’s words ring in her mind, she became good to all.

Meanwhile, her father married another woman, who had two beautiful but wicked daughters. The woman took them to her new home with her.smile woman

When the time for paying homage to her late mother reached, the two girls saw the poor girl and said: “What does the donkey have for this house?” They stripped her of her beautiful clothes and forced her to wear an ugly gray cloth.

They laughed at her; they watched her in the kitchen as they kept pressing her to work hard. Finally she started getting up early in the morning while it was still dark. When she got up she would draw water and light a fire.

The two girls continued ridiculing her and even nicknamed her Kisonoko. She was denied a bed to sleep on, making her survive on an ash floor in the kitchen, while extremely tired.african happy women

One day her father wanted to go to town. He asked his children what they wished to be brought. The first child said, “I want the best clothes.”

The second child said, “Bring me some pearls and a ribbon.”

Then he turned to the motherless child and asked, “What do you like?” The child replied, “Dear dad, I want you to set up the first branch that will hit your hat while you are back.”

Thebeautifulir father went to town. He bought the first girl what she had asked for. The second child picked up pearls and ribbons. As he returned home, a branch of a pea hit him in the hat, making it fall. He took it to his other daughter as she had requested him.

The girl took an old little branch and went up to her mother’s grave. She wept very loudly, and at last she used the old little branch to wipe out her tears from her eyes. And when a good tree fell in the garden, she would walk three times every day on it to the garden.

As the birds built their nests on the tree, one kept talking to her, and the girl always felt guarded. The mother also brought her everything she liked.

Now, the king in that country had a son who wanted to marry. He finally organized a feast and gathered all the people for the festival. The purpose of the festival was to enable his son to choose his preferred partner. The two girls were also invited. But before they set off, they called Kisonoko and said to her, “You snitch to scatter our noses, make our shoes, tie our cords, we want to go to the King’s feast.”

Kisonoko did as they explained. When she finished, she did not weep so much, since she had also planned to go to the festival. Finally she asked her step-mother to let her go.

Her mother said, “You are a Snoopy, you do not have the clothes to wear and you want to go?  You do not know how to dance at all yet you want to attend the ceremony?”

Kisonoko kept pleading, and her mother said to her, “If you want to go, then I will pour one sack of sorghum and mix it with ashes. If you can analyze the oils for about two hours, you will go to the dance.

Kisonoko ran out to the back door into the garden and wept there. One of the birds told the others, “Quickly jump into the tent and help the baby, the black and the blue bird, and hurry. Let us go, one or all, to help the girl speed up her task.”

And the two birds flew into the kitchen through the window, followed by two others afterwards. So the little birds started living in the tent. They helped the poor girl to separate the oils from the rice.

They put the oils in the bowl and dried the rice. All this work was accomplished within an hour. Once done, the birds flew out through the window again.

The girl brought the bowl to her mother with the joy, knowing that that she would now be permitted to go to the dance. But her mother said, “No, you are a slut. You cannot go; you do not have clothes to wear to the dance.”

Kisonoko continued to plead with her stepmother, but instead she was given a new task. “Now you can pick up two sacks of ointment for about an hour.” The woman thought she would be able to dissuade Kisonoko from persisting to go to the dance. She took two bags of ointments and mixed with ashes to make the work harder for the girl.

Kisonoko ran out to her usual garden behind the house. She cried again.  One bird said to the others, “Quick, hurry to the tent, help the poor child. The red and the blue, quickly birds, let us go, one or all to help, quickly pick up pick up.”rainbow-lorikeets-433436__340

And many birds came to the rescue of the girl. Within a short while, the work was done. Then Kisonoko went to pick up the bowl and took it to her mother with a great deal of joy.

She thought that there would be no more obstacles this time around. But her mother told her, “All of this is stupid, you cannot go to the festival; you have no clothes so you cannot dance, you will just shame us.”

After saying that, she left with her children to go to the feast. Kisonoko went to sit at the peacock tree and wept, saying, “round yourself round yourself peas, you make for me a gold chain, and a lot of clothes.”

Her friends flew into a fig tree and brought her a gold-colored dress and shoes. Then she went to the party; no one could tell that it was Kisonoko. They thought it was another woman, who was well known for her expensive dressing.smile-1485850__340

The king’s son approached Kisonoko, got hold of her and started dancing with her. He did not dance with anyone else, and he never held out his hand to signal any other girl come to the floor.

When the festival was over and Kisonoko wanted to go home, the prince said, “I will take you home,” His intention was to visit the girl’s home and appreciate it. While on the way, Kisonoko quickly escaped from the man and fled. He ran after her, but she flew into a big dove of pigeons and closed the door behind her.

The man stood there until his father came over. He told the dad, “The famous lady at the feast has hidden herself in the pigeons’ hole here.”

When they entered the house, they saw Kisonoko lying on the ash, and the fire was burning.

She hurriedly ran to a dove’s eye and came to the pea and stripped off her beautiful clothes and put them under the pearls so the birds could pick them up. She returned quickly and lain herself on the ash as usual.

The next day another festival was prepared. When her mother, father and grandparents were gone to the ceremony, she went back to the peas and said, “Round yourself, round yourself the peas, you make for me a gold chain, across the cloth.”gulls-370012_960_720

The bird brought her the best clothes, like at the beginning. When she came to the dance, she was given a standing ovation by the crowd. Everyone was very surprised at her beauty. The man, who was waiting for her all along, embraced her and began dancing with her. Everybody wanted to dance with her, but the man said, “This lady is dancing with none other than me.”african-woman-1580545__340

As the night wore on, Kisonoko wanted to go home, as usual. The man followed her like he had done earlier. His goal was to get to know her house.

But she ran and hid herself in the garden behind her father’s house. In the garden, there was an orange tree that bore many fruits. She just vanished into the tree without a trace. The man stood there until Kisonoko’s father returned home.

He told him, “The famous lady who was dancing with me has gone through here.” Her father thought: “Could she have become Kisonoko?” He decided to bring the tree to the ground, but he did not find her. When they went to the kitchen they found Kisonoko sleeping as usual.

On the third day after her father, her mother and grandparents left home, she went back to the garden weeping; “Swim the peas, the gold plates, and the coat of clothes.” The birds brought her the best clothes and golden shoes during those two days. When she arrived at the festival everyone was speechless about her beauty.

She danced with the man again, and at the end she wanted to leave as usual. The man followed her, telling himself, “Now I will be careful enough not to let her escape.” But Kisonoko ran very fast, leaving her left foot shoe on the chair. The man picked it up and took it to her father the next day. He told the Kisonoko’s father, “I want to see the one whose foot fits in this shoe.”

When the two wicked girls heard about it, they were very happy, because they had small, beautiful legs, which they knew would fit in the shoe.

The first one went into the mule room, tried on the shoe, but her toes were irregular. Meanwhile, her mother was keenly watching her.

As expected, the shoe could not fit because of one of the toes. The mother took a knife and said, “There’s no way you will fail to become queen at the palace because one big toe on your foot”

And the foolish mother went ahead and cut off the offending toe. She shouted that the shoe fitted her daughter’s foot, deceiving the man. The man hoisted his girlfriend onto the horse, climbed it and travelled some distance.

As they went on they passed by a place where there was a riot. A fowl was perched on a man’s skull, singing:

“Come back, come back, the shoe is full of blood, check your girlfriend well, there is a confusion, your real girlfriend is at home, you left her there.”

KISWAHILI: HADITHI YA WANA WAWILI

Alikuwepo mwanamume mmoja aliyekuwa na wana wawili waliokuwa wanaume tu. Wana hao, walimwambia baba yao hivi, “Baba tunataka kwenda kutafuta mali. Tunaomba Baraka zako.” Naye aliwabariki akisema, “Tembeeni na Baraka wanangu. Lakini nendeni mkiweka alama kwenye miti.”

Kijana mkubwa katika safari yake, alipofika porini alianza kukata kata miti, anapumzika. Kesho yake alianza tena kazi yake ya kukata kata miti hiyo.

Mdogo wake katika safari yake, yeye alifika kwenye familia akatengeneza urafiki na kijana wa familia hiyo. Alilala hapo, kesho yake alifika kwenye familia nyingine, na pale ashikana urafiki na kijana wa pale.

Walipomaliza walirudi nyumbani, mzee aliwaambia, “twendeni wanangu nikakague alama zenu za kwenye miti.” Wakafika porini, mzee alioneshwa na kijana mkubwa kazi yake aliyoifanya ya kukata kata miti.

Mzee alimwambia kijana mdogo, “nioneshe nawe kazi zako.” Wakaenda akapelekwa kwenye familia, wakapokelewa vizuri mno. Wakachinjiwa na mbuzi, wakalala pale.

Kesho yake, walienda kwenye familia nyingine, na pale walipokelewa vizuri mno. Wakarudi nyumbani wakiwa na mizigo ya nyama na ngozi za wanyama waliochinjiwa.

Mzee alimwambia kijana mkubwa, “Mwanangu, huna akili, huwezi kutunza watu, nilikuambia, kuweka alama kwenye miti, wewe ukakata kata mamiti! Kwenye mamiti yako tumeona humo kizuri gani? Mdogo wako aliweka alama kwenye miti kweli. Tulipokelewa vizuri mno, tukachinjiwa mbuzi. Nitamuoza kwanza mdogo wako, wewe nitakuoza nyuma yake, baadaye kwa vile huna akili.”

ENGLISH: THE PARABLE OF THE TWO BROTHERS

Two brothers wanted to go to a distant country to make their fortune. They asked their father for a blessing, saying: “Father, we go on our way to make our fortune. Your blessing, please.” Their father agreed, saying, “Go with my blessing, but on your way put marks on the trees lest you get lost.” After they received the blessing, the two brothers started on their safari.

The older brother entered the forest and cut down some of the trees as he passed and made marks on other trees. He did this for the whole journey. The younger brother took another route. While on the way, he arrived at the house of a certain person. He knocked on the door. He was invited in and made friends with the children of that family. The younger brother continued on his journey and made friends wherever he passed.

Finally, the two brothers returned home. On their arrival their father gave them a warm welcome, saying, “How happy I am to see you back home again, my sons, especially since you have returned safely. Wonderful! Now I would like to see the marks which you have left on the trees.”

So the father went with his firstborn son. On the way the older brother showed his father all kinds of trees that he had cut down and others with the marks that he had put on along the way. They traveled a long distance without eating on the trip. Finally, they returned home empty-handed.

Then the father set out with his secondborn son. During the journey different friends warmly received the younger son and his father. They were treated as special guests at each place they visited. Goats were slaughtered to welcome them. They were very happy. They brought home many gifts including meat and other presents.

Then the father summoned his two sons and said: “Dear sons, I have seen the work that you have done. I will arrange a marriage for the one who has done better.” He turned to the firstborn son and said, “My son, I think you are foolish. You cannot take care of people. I told you to put marks on the trees wherever you pass. You have cut down many trees. What is the profit of all these trees?” Turning to the second son he said: “My son, you are clever. I am happy you have put such important marks wherever you have gone. Wherever we passed, we received a very good welcome. This came from your good personal relationships with the people we visited.”

Then he said: “My dear children, now it is good for me to give my reward. I will arrange a big feast for my younger son. We will slaughter a cow for him. For my younger son has made good and lasting marks wherever he passed.”

From this Sukuma story comes the Sukuma proverb: To make marks on the trees. The theme of the story and the proverb is “Good Personal Relationships in Life.” The meaning is that to build good relationships with people is a very important priority in our lives.
